Why Romney's 'dog on car roof' story makes him unfit to be president
Fox News ^ | January 13, 2012 | Lanny Davis

It might be unseemly to bring this up just as Mitt Romney celebrates his win in New Hampshire on Tuesday night and seems to be a strong front-runner for the GOP nomination. But the story of his putting his dog in a carrier on his car roof for a 12-hour family trip is spreading again on the Internet and disturbs me the more I learn about it.

And I am betting the more it gets out, the more votes Romney loses — red, blue and purple.

When, in a campaign debate, Romney opposed allowing a non-documented worker who has lived here for 25 years to stay and earn his way to citizenship, he struck me as heartless.

But when I read the story recently in greater detail about what Romney did to his Irish Setter, Seamus, that struck me as more than heartless — it struck me as downright cruel.

I think this is a good story to pass around, because it's really one of those revealing incidents about Romney's essential character, that makes any normal person with empathy immediately wonder, "Wow, what the hell is wrong with this guy…?"

For those who haven't seen it yet, Newt has a web-ad out—For the Dogs—which brings up the Seamus incident, along with other weird gaffes from Romney.

I’m a dog person but I also know that 30 years ago people in general didn’t understand dogs the way we do know.

“Love me, love my dog” is so recent that nobody bothered to quote it in ancient Latin! /s

Dog, in a carrier, on a car roof. Bad. Dog running around in the back of a pickup, good? Just asking.

I didn't realize this happened almost 30 years ago. That being said, it is the most ridiculous criterion of presidential fitness 30 years later that I have ever heard.

I mean it isn't like LBJ lifting up his beagle by its ears.

Lanny Davis, who stood by the rapist Bill Clinton as president, is not in a position to dictate to us by what moral standards we should choose our nominee. Even if he is attacking Mitt Romney.

This Romney hate is now bordering on insanity . It reminds me of the Bush and Palin derangement syndrome. When your detractors have to rely on dog and french speaking stories you have already won.

With all the information about Romney that has come out already, anyone who says that this story convinces them to vote against Romney deserves a 12 hour ride on the roof with the dog.

Dog, in a carrier, on a roof, so scared he got diaharrea so bad it was dripping down the back of a car REALLY REALLY bad!

Running downt to the vet would be bad enough, a 12 hour trip on the roof of a car? That takes someone who is so totally self absorbed they can't think of what that dog must have gone through.

Romney is the LAST republican I would wan’t, but this is just dumb. Really dumb. But if there are Freepers who fall for it, you can imagine, and see, how the liberals are going to play with it...

I understand that. It was a bad thing to do. What I was getting at was why is it okay to have a dog running around in the back of a pickup? They’re both stupid things to do.

Yes.
Like the ‘adulation’ for anything D Morris says.

Goes back to when O North was running for the Senate and Mrs Reagan was not a ‘fan’.

The libs were all over themselves ‘quoting Nancy’ on her dislike for North when a mere 6 months (or so) earlier she was vilified as the nastiest woman on earth (ala the libs)

I despise these ‘Johnny come lately’ libs on ‘our’ side as much as I did the Lib media ‘praising’ Nancy R.

Do people generally drive across country for 12 hours straight at 60-70 mph with their dog in the back of a pickup truck? Doubtful. Plus, at least in the bed of a pickup truck they have some room to move around and have some shielding from the winds, etc. Apparently there were laws against this sort of thing at the time, too.

I don’t think one incident like this necessarily disqualifies a person to be president—that isn’t the point IMO. But it does demonstrate weirdly callous judgment on his part and makes me wonder if it’s a consistent pattern of behavior that’s shown up in other ways.
