After a disappointing fifth-place finish in Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, Texas Governor Rick Perry said he is going home to Texas to assess "whether there is a path forward for myself in this race."

"With the voters' decision tonight in Iowa, I've decided to return to Texas, assess the results of tonight's caucus, determine whether there is a path forward for myself in this race," Perry told supporters at the end of the night.

The candidate, once considered a frontrunner in the race for the GOP nomination, earned just 10 percent on Tuesday's contest with more

Perry 2016!

Gag. Do we really need him to run for comic relief again? Besides we won’t be having a primary in 2016 after President Sanotrum’s first term.

“That leaves 4th-place Newt as the best hope so far for an electable conservative. Which makes me sad as for everything that’s important, Perry is at least as good as Newt.”

I hear ya. I think Perry was far and away the best qualified conservative with the least amount of baggage to take on Obama. Don’t know who to go with now-I just don’t know that Santorum has the resources and infrastructure, but I could be wrong. Between Newt & Santorum on the merit-I guess I’d go Santorum. But as to who can go the distance and knock out Romney-I’m thinking probably Newt.

One thing I’d say about Perry is at least he’s true to what he’s said on the campaign trail that “this campaign is not about me, but about the future of our country.” Unlike Romney stalking horse Bachmann, I believe Perry understands the imperative to make sure Romney is not the nominee, and if he believes that he’s doing nothing but fracturing the anti-Romney vote with no clear path himself to victory, then he’ll do what he thinks is right and drop out.

If Governor Perry can hold off until the southern states have their primaries, he may start pulling off some victories. He has a wide appeal in the southern states.

Yeah, you are right.

Perry 2020!

lol. Absolutely. Sheesh he has been running for Governor forever so maybe he just likes to run. Well at least FINALLY we won’t hear, but Perry never lost an election. Well now he can’t say that anymore and I could not be more thrilled by that knowledge.

“Rick Santorum has virtually no infrastructure outside of Iowa. Santorum spent very little money in Iowa. I heard about 300K. Perry spent over 6 million dollars and brought in 1200 army folks to canvas Iowa. Perry sunk like a rock. Money is not everything. Perry was just a dismal miserable disaster worst candidate in history candidate. He lost and hopefully tomorrow he will drop out and do America a favor and never appear again.”

Much to the delight of Romney, I’m afraid. He doesn’t have to deal with Perry’s money (money that would’ve been used on effective campaign ads in the other states that matter) and as you said, Santorum has virtually no infrastructure outside of Iowa. Romney would much rather deal with Santorum than Perry.

Santorum is a good guy but he needs a lot of work. And soon.

When Cain was first rumored to be reassessing his campaign, nearly ALL the pundits said that was a euphemism for “getting out of the race”

Seems logical.

When Perry has to decide "whether there is a path forward for myself in this race" as he put it, that's almost a sure sign that he doesn't think there is a path forward.

If he knew for certain that there was a path forward, he wouldn't be expressing such doubt. He'd be chomping at the bit to move on to South Carolina and playing that up.

I'm honestly surprised he's expressing this much doubt about his campaign. 10% and 5th place...Bachmann and Huntsman would both like to be where he's at.

I don’t care. Santorum won and Perry got his a$$ handed to him. I am thrilled by the results. President Santorum will be wonderful and as I said, Perry can be the Ambassador of Brazil in the Santorum administration. It is a quite job and he does not have to talk.

What "trick questions"? Counting to three?

lol!

Apparently, remembering and reciting one's own policy is considered a "trick question".

Perry's campaign is in the gutter because he was a terrible candidate who could not shake or defend his terrible past. So called "trick questions" had nothing to do with it.

Wow. Didn't think of that. She fought for her candidate like no other person here at FR. I will miss the constant Perry posting, but it didn't look good for Perry continuing after tonight. The letter reading seemed too sentimental to rally supporters to the next state. My condolences.

That's how I feel. I've never seen somebody as devoted to Perry as she was. I may disagree with her, and I may poke fun at her attempts to spin Perry's negatives, but she has stayed true to him, even when a lot of FReepers dumped Perry for Cain and then Gingrich.

I think I confused her after she realized I wasn't really that devoted to any particular candidate - I've been disappointed too many times over the decades when I devoted myself to a particular candidate to want to hitch my wagon to one horse and ride them till they drop.

Perry spent over 6 million dollars and brought in 1200 army folks to canvas Iowa. Perry sunk like a rock. Money is not everything.

Ask Meg Whitman about the 150,000,000 (million) she spent, and still couldn't buy the governors office, after the illegals came pouring out of her mansion.

Perry was done long ago.

When he told Americans they had no heart when it came to this epic invasion, after Americans, for 25 plus years have been swindled, beat down and economically gang raped by millions of illegals...Well, he quickly sealed his own fate.

When Perry said that, I knew right then and there, the man should slink back into Texas, and retire on his fat tax paid government pension. And that is exactly what is going to happen.

His speech tonight was more of a reflection of where he’s been rather than a course of what’s to come.

He didn't express doubt about the past, he expressed doubt about "whether there is a path forward for myself in this race". That's definitely discussing what's to come.

You got to be devoted to spin Perry’s In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens.

Perry can be the Ambassador of Brazil in the Santorum administration.

I think he should be ambassador for Mexico; he's been advocating for them for years.

The first half of his entire speech was devoted to looking back at his run in Iowa and contrasting it with his successful run in Texas. No said said he expressed doubts about the past, including myself.
