CBS NEWS ^ | Tuesday January 3, 2012

After a disappointing fifth-place finish in Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, Texas Governor Rick Perry said he is going home to Texas to assess "whether there is a path forward for myself in this race."

"With the voters' decision tonight in Iowa, I've decided to return to Texas, assess the results of tonight's caucus, determine whether there is a path forward for myself in this race," Perry told supporters at the end of the night.

The candidate, once considered a frontrunner in the race for the GOP nomination, earned just 10 percent on Tuesday's contest with more

I am not liking his chances after his advertisements regarding relating gays inn the military to praying in schools. I liked what he was saying, but aspiring presidents have to be more subtle and tactful about these things. If getting social justice is your number one goal, running for president is not a viable career option.

I should being an American president is not a viable career option in that case.

When Cain was first rumored to be reassessing his campaign, nearly ALL the pundits said that was a euphemism for “getting out of the race”

Seems logical.

I did not like how Perry seemed to be using his faith to score political points. If a voter or a reporter asks you a question, fine, answer it ... but don't put commercials on TV.

I feel similarly about Romney using his long marriage as a campaign flare.

I think it’s very disappointing that so-called conservatives decided to pick their candidate based on answering trick questions posed by liberal “debate” moderators rather than actual performance.

Rick Santorum has virtually no infrastructure outside of Iowa. Even if he isn’t savaged by the media (and it will come) I don’t think he has enough money or national organization to win the primary, and I don’t think tonight’s win (or 2nd place?) will do enough for him to get everything together in time. Would love to be proven wrong though.

Romney = Obama wins. Enough said.

I happen to like Ron Paul’s domestic policies, and would be glad to support him if he won. But I think he has as much Republican opposition as Romney does, and agree that his foreign policy ideas are naive/impractical. I don’t think he will become the nominee.

That leaves 4th-place Newt as the best hope so far for an electable conservative. Which makes me sad as for everything that’s important, Perry is at least as good as Newt.

Should always include the Freeper when you mention their name. Maybe than CincinatusWife can answer the question directly.

Wow. Didn't think of that. She fought for her candidate like no other person here at FR. I will miss the constant Perry posting, but it didn't look good for Perry continuing after tonight. The letter reading seemed too sentimental to rally supporters to the next state. My condolences.

We’re down to two conservatives, a liberal from Massachusetts, and an Israel hatin’ Nutjob.

Pick a conservative.

(Michele, Cain, Palin, and Perry better endorse one SOON, too. Otherwise, it’s helping Willard.)

I had high hopes for Rick Perry. Too bad he couldn’t articulate consistent conservative ideas. I know I have been spoiled by having Marco Rubio clearly articulating conservative ideals. Time for Michele Bachmann to go too. I really wanted to be on her side as well.

This isn't surprising to me, and neither is Perry's poor showing in the Iowa Caucus tonight. He's been polling in the single digits for some time now, and hasn't regained much of anything he lost, after his "heartless" comment, and his other debate difficulties.

I know how dedicated some of his FR supporters have been, but he just hasn't been making news, and I haven't seen any buzz about him for months now. I think the point has come where it's time to call it like it is, and throw in the towel.

Not true. He has the second best ground game in NH. Romney is first obviously . FOX just had a discussion on how Santorum has been making visits there under the radar and has people in all the counties. As for the media anal exam, who cares. They will destroy whoever we put up. We will work around the media like we did in '10.

NH is a fraction of Iowa’s size.

A bus driver has infrastructure there.

This is why neither of these states should be first. They favor too many gimmicks, and are too small.

His speech tonight was more of a reflection of where he’s been rather than a course of what’s to come.

Rick Santorum has virtually no infrastructure outside of Iowa. Santorum spent very little money in Iowa. I heard about 300K. Perry spent over 6 million dollars and brought in 1200 army folks to canvas Iowa. Perry sunk like a rock. Money is not everything. Perry was just a dismal miserable disaster worst candidate in history candidate. He lost and hopefully tomorrow he will drop out and do America a favor and never appear again.
