Don Surber: The case for Rick Perry
Daily Mail ^ | December 21, 2011 | Don Surber

Posted on 12/21/2011 12:30:44 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Will Republican voters give Governor Rick Perry a second chance? For what it is worth, I give him a 5% chance of being elected next November. Others also seem to think he has a shot and he is even beginning to get niot only another look but some endorsements.

Ace of Ace of Spades HQ — a pretty big blogger — made a very good case for Rick Perry, which is why Ace has such a good reputation. He pointed out that most voters have not been paying attention to the race and bloggers and their readers have paid perhaps too much attention. He also pointed out that we have to look beneath the surface at what he calls the secondary and tertiary issues.

His is a 3,000 word post or about the size of 4 George Will columns, and it is probably worth more.

Ace’s key points: Rick Perry is true to his wife, did the military time, and jobs, jobs, jobs.

Ace blisters the knocks on Rick Perry while knocking Newt Gingrich. It’s sweet. I am reading this and think, sheesh, these are points that I should be making. From Ace: “Should Gingrich be our nominee, be prepared to do a lot of double-takes as faithfulness and devotion to family suddenly becomes the key trait in a president. The media will call Rick Perry stupid, of course. And Perry has armed them with weapons to use on this front. However, his gaffes are now several months old, and he hasn’t repeated them.”

I think Ace went a little too far in knocking the lack of service time for Newt and Mitt. Yes, they were of draft age during Vietnam. But only 10% of that pool served. In the last 3 presidential elections, it has been a Vietnam veteran versus a person who did not serve in Vietnam. Each Vietnam vet finished second.

The jobs, jobs, jobs aspect is the best selling point because it shows not only does Rick Perry have executive experience, he has executive success. From Ace:

America, and especially the Republican party, has long favored elevating governors to the presidency. Governors are, after all, the presidents of single states. They have nearly the exact same duties and functions (including even maintaining and controlling the state national guards). They have similar executive powers and set the agendas for their respective legislatures. In the case of border states such as Texas, they even require some foreign policy making duties.

No job in the world really prepares someone for the Presidency. But one job, more than any other, comes fairly close to doings so.

So Rick Perry cannot handle high executive office?

Then how is it he’s been doing just that for 11 years?

(And if you want to object that Texas has a weak-governor system, with a lot of power vested in the lieutenant governor position — well, they claimed that about George W. Bush, too. And claimed that Rick Perry actually was doing all the hard stuff in his then-position of Lieutenant Governor. So wherever the power lies in Texas, Perry has handled it, in both jobs.)

The stakes in this election are enormous. The next president may well appoint five justices the Supreme Court, essentially choosing our basic jurisprudence for the next 30 years. This will be the presidency in which we make fundamental decisions about debt, and spending, and entitlements. Decisions on those may decide our fiscal policy for the next 20 or 30 years, too.

But while those are the stakes of this election, the election will actually turn on… Jobs.

The piece could have ended there. Ace goes into a defensive mode that is really unnecessary. But this is an important post because Ace is influential in the conservative blogs. I shall give that link again.

The baggage Rick Perry carries is perhaps more humorous than what the others carry, but it is far lighter.

With Newt Gingrich you have to defend three wives, unethical personal and professional behavior, a career of weird positions, and a tendency to out-Obama when it comes to his own assessment of his intelligence. as I wrote earlier, winning all these debates gives Newt overconfidence in the fall campaign on his debating skills. When he falls behind he will bet it all on winning big in the next debate and guess what? He won’t. Everyone will expect him to win.

Mitt Romney’s baggage is Romneycare and wishy-washyness. He has a great life story and could make a great president who balances the budget and makes the nation strong again. But he is so plodding.

Rick Perry needs to stop trying to work the social issues and instead relax, be himself and have fun with the whole campaign. He seems to enjoy pressing the flesh and of everyone running, including President Downgrade, Rick Perry is the guy you want to have a beer with because he’ll pay and it will be a Lone Star. I can see voting for such a man.

That said, I am not endorsing anyone at this point.

But on a scale of conservatism with 10 being Reagan and 1 being Carter, I give Rick Perry a 9. Sure, the HPV vaccine was a mistake but it was one made for the right reason: To save lives.

Michele Bachmann has no chance. Rick Santorum ditto. Rick Perry is the last conservative standing.

He may be dumb but he did not endorse Dede Scozzafava, did he? And yes, that still matters.

It’s Pretty obvious Perry’s not interested in his run....he never wanted it to begin with. He loves being Governor of Texas and that’s where he should be..and he knows it.

He did give his word last year during the Republican primaries that he would serve out his term as Governor if we elected him again, and giving your word in Texas is a big deal.

It's possible that he wants to keep his word to Texans and serve out the rest of his term as Governor, and he appears to be doing just that.

Care to clue us in as to how Perry is going to deal with the MSM/Obama machine?

-------------------------------------

Care to clue us in on how any GOP candidate is going to deal with the MSM/Obama machine?

Do you seriously think only Perry would have to deal with that?

LOL!!!!!!!!

You are pushing Perry, so I thought that you would have an idea of the strategy that he will have to employ to get past them.

But apparently you guys aren’t thinking that far ahead, or you just have no frigging clue and just think his oh so awesome conservative attributes will scare them away.

Just a little advice: He isnt going to have another chance to go disappear and “retool” nor are people going to care about his back problems.

If college tuition to illegals is the be-all and end-all to those people in the upcoming election... so be it.

They’ll get what they vote for. And it’d be a pretty clear message that most ‘Tea Partiers’ only give lip service to the small-government, little regulation, pro-growth beliefs espoused by Perry.

He pissed off a passel of folks with his "heartless" comment and that has nothing to do with his back surgery.

If that is the worst you have been called, think again. The current president called American's lazy and speaks to us as if we are a pack of imbeciles.

You keep gnawing on that "heartless" comment like a dog. Maybe you should let it go. As a veteran, you should be more concerned with preserving the freedom's that you served to protect.

As an American, you should look around and see where this country is headed. If you support someone else, fine. However, you really need to give it a rest already. Otherwise, I imagine people sitting at their keyboards are calling you names worse than "heartless."

To harp on the instate tuition makes you sound like a broken record. Perry is strong on 2nd amendment, strong on pro life, strong on tax cutting and smaller less important federal government. Those are the things that are most important to me.

Before he was Governor of Texas he was LT Gov and they called him the bulldog of the legislature because of taxcutting. I like that about him.

As far as the instate tuition I am sure you know that the prospective student had to finish 3 years of Texas skoal and have applied for citizenship. The federal government was not going to send these kids back to Mexico and they can get an education and be productive legal citizens or they can stand on the corner with a plastic cup begging. Your choice would be?

I'm Endorsing 3 Candidates …………..”Rick Perry is my #1 choice right now because I think he’s actually the least compromised and most truly bonafide Conservative candidate in the race. He had a couple of missteps in the early debates but everything since then has been wonderful. He is going to be the only candidate I donate money to in this election cycle. I’m supporting him with cash. Not much, but he’s the only candidate I’m supporting with cash. Romney and Gingrich have enough already, and I want more than anything else to see Rick Perry make this a contest.

In the end I trust Rick Perry more than I do either Romney or Gingrich when it comes to the things I care about as a Republican/Conservative.”……..

"I don't think Perry is dumb."

I don't either. He wasn't ready to debate and obviously did not spend enough time on it before the initial debates. He's gotten much better now, but it might be too little too late. It's a shame because when he got in, I felt that if he just showed he was competent in the debates it was his nomination to lose. He made too many gaffes and was flummoxed on the immigration and gardesel questions. It may have sealed his fate. He should have been more prepared. I don't think his campaign staff concentrated enough on this stuff.

Mr. "Say anything to get elected" Perry is one of the biggest cons the "Establishment Republicans" have pulled on conservatives in a long time.
His "protect any ILLEGAL that crosses our border" is absolutely disgusting.
Anyone, and I mean ANYONE who believes the garbage Perry's spewing ... well ... they need to go to a mental ward.

Never forget ....

If you want a real conservative, pick Bachmann or Santorum,

The picture of what is supposed to be an adult illegal alien you post is an example who would NOT get instate tution rates under the law passed by the Texas legislature with only 4 voting no.

The law would apply to a child who was walked, driven or carried over the border by an adult who illegally entered.

The child by federal law must be educated in the public schools. It is illegal to deny education to a child of illegal entrants.

To receive instate college tuition rates, the child must have attended a Texas high school for three years and must have graduated.

The type of person whose image you depict in no way qualifies for instate tuition.

But you have never let rationality, facts and truth get in your way, and I’m sure you won’t let it get in your way in the future.

You and your ilk have become cartoon characters and meaner than junkyard dogs...nice combination there...and aren’t taken seriously by serious people.

No, I wouldn't vote for that "legalize all drugs" idiot, even if he was the only candidate we had.
After all the back and forth we've discussed, you should know by now that I'm torn

Doesn't matter.
Liar Perry has already revealed his disrespect for the United States sovereignty, our borders, our laws, and our Constitution.
And yet still, ... he gets 10 percent support from idiots who'll vote Democrat in the general.
Just how stupid can they get?
