VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- A Navy tradition has caught up with the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" rule on gays serving openly in the U.S. military. The Navy said two women shared the coveted "first kiss" Wednesday when the USS Oak Hill returned home to its Virginia base. Marissa Gaeta of Pacerville, Calif., descended from the ship and shared a quick kiss with her partner, Citlalic (SEET-lah-leek) Snell of Los Angeles. The crowd screamed and waved Navy flags around them. Both women are fire controlmen in the Navy. They met at training school and have been dating for two years. Naval officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship's return.

I, and most on here know what you mean BUT in actuality in the 40’s through 60’s gay still meant happy and carefree.
I remember as a young naive sailor in the 50’s thinking how strange all the men in certain sections of town were real friendly.
But, being raised right, the ‘don’t talk to strangers’ kicked in so.............

Also had never heard of the ‘designated 1st kiss’ but never was married when aboard ship so it wouldn’t have interested me anyway - besides we would have ‘bitched’ about the married guys getting all the breaks....

It was most definitely. My mom was a convent educated girl from New Orleans. She had a certain naivete about her all of her life. I don't think she would have joined the military if her fiance, who was a flier, hadn't been shot down.
Mom used to tell me that his mother would continually remind her that she, my mother, had to hang on because they were sure to find Bill (the fiance)on one of those islands in the Pacific. My mother felt that she could better "hang on" if she was doing something constructive. Sadly, at the end of it all, Bill was never found.

A favorite tactic of draft dodgers during the Vietnam war, and probably other wars before that, was to declare themselves gay. That would automatically disqualify them for service and no risk of being jailed as was the case with the ones who fled to Canada(such as Bill Clinton).
I guess that you fail to see the romance in it.
Besides, how would the draft improve things? You cannot deny lesbians entry into the USN.

I’d heard Eisenhower wanted lesbos out of the WACs or WAVEs or both and was told such a large number would be gone there wouldn’t be...well I can’t recall the % posited etc.

Abstract
The most famous lesbian story to come out of World War II was told by Women’s Army Corps (WAC) soldier Nell “Johnnie” Phelps, who claimed to have been given an order by General Dwight D. Eisenhower to “ferret out the lesbians” in her WAC detachment. This article backgrounds her story with history of women in the WAC in World War II and recounts the narrative as it appears in transcripts of Phelps’ oral history and in other publications featuring it. It analyzes the public discourse around Phelps’ account and its disproval and examines the ways the story has been used for political, historical, community, and personal aims since the oral history was taken in 1982.

Yep! I saw a wife spend her husband's re-enlistment bonus on a motorcycle for her boyfriend. The stories I could tell.
My last long cruise was nearly 8 months on Eisenhower. The final two weeks were when the "Dear John" emails began arriving. The divorce notices arrive. That's when you really have to keep an eye on your shipmates. Some of them left problems at home when they deployed that they soon have to face. Others are returning to homes far different than they ones they left behind. The last couple of weeks on cruise are critical, something I regularly remind my sailors of.
