Company's departure a sign state's business climate is in the trash
Sacramento Bee ^ | 12/19/11 | Ted Gaines

An ugly scene in the California economy played out in our own backyard this week, as Waste Connections, Sacramento's most valuable company, announced that it is moving its corporate headquarters – and the 100 jobs that go with it – to a Houston suburb.

Waste Connections was a shining star in local business, starting here 15 years ago as a one-man shop and growing into a 6,500-employee behemoth operating in 30 states.

But CEO and founder Ron Mittelstaedt has finally had enough of California's hostile, complex, expensive business environment and decided to pull up his stakes and head to greener pastures, where government doesn't treat business like the enemy. The company is paying $15 million in relocation costs to escape our state.

Mittelstaedt told News 10 that "California has great weather, great people, but it has a very difficult business climate." Unfortunately, that is a massive understatement.

When the business community begins to clue into the value of tort reform, affordable housing, no personal income tax, corrupt political environment in California and decent public schools more and more business will have to give serious consideration to “relocating!”

One more wise business owner who sees that the California leftists will vote to bankrupt the State.

The saying formerly was: “Go West Young Man Go West”. The newly revised saying is: “Get out while you can.”

I’d love to know how long it will take the advantages of being in Texas for the company to recover the $ 15 mill in relocation costs..

Welcome to Texas, leave your liberal ideas at the border.

Well said, as always, mylife.

I know we're both originally from the same general area of the Rust Belt where the steel industry was killed by unions and government regulations. As a result we have genuine appreciation for Texas values and don't want our strong economy and special brand of liberty tarnished by liberalism, homosexualism, atheism, unionism or any number of other "isms" favored by leftists.

They will recover the $15 million in relocation expenses within a month or so.

Has anyone read the comments posted on the Sac Bee? The liberals are in major denial mode.

How can you place a value on relieving the stress of living in hell and the constant harassment by pure unadulterated ass holes?

Then there is the future. How can you place a value on the future compared with no future in California?

Life is for living not kowtowing to criminals that are the democrat party

“One more wise business owner who sees that the California leftists will vote to bankrupt the State.”

As a retired California resident, I applaud this move and hope that there are many, many more coming in the immediate future. I am convinced that California’s salvation lies in going completely broke. Where there’s no money left for the “takers” to take they will move on ( maybe even back to Mexico ). Then, and only then, will we have the opportunity to rebuild the political system here and relegate the RATS to a generation as a minority. I may not live to see it, but it will come. I am just very lucky to have grown up here in this wonderful state in the 1950’s when it was the best at everything! The morons here today have no frame of reference, and that’s a shame.

Some of those people are seriously delusional just like the typical Columbia SC reader of The State.

Is Californicate still considering the “exit” tax? Better move while the moving is good. I can see Moonbeam proposing the “exit” tax to ensure everyone pays their fair share ... especially before they leave the state.

The comments are stunning. Literally! "Good riddance", etc. There is apparently no realization of the future they are facing as businesses (and tax payers) emigrate to bluer skies and greener grasses.

Over/under on when California becomes the next Ohio? And Sacramento the next Cleveland?

The idea is to avoid the millions they will have to pay in future taxes that the lefties will think up on top of what they have now. I am sure they have done the math and it is favorable to them or they wouldn't be moving. If I had the money I would move the he** out of CA so fast all they would see would be a streak of light.
