Rejoice: Incandescent Light Bulb Ban Suspended

As part of last night's omnibus budget bill which prevented government shutdown, Republicans won a small victory: they suspended the incandescent light bulb ban. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle bowed to widespread public pressure, as the American people made it clear they weren't interested in this literal government intrusion into their livingrooms.

Congressional Republicans dropped almost all of the policy restrictions they tried to attach to the bill, but won inclusion of the light bulb provision, which prevents the Obama administration from carrying through a 2007 law that would have set energy efficiency standards that effectively made the traditional light bulb obsolete.

The bill doesn’t actually amend the 2007 law, but does prohibit the administration from spending any money to carry out the light bulb standards — which amounts to at least a temporary reprieve.

YAY!!! My mom has been stockpiling light bulbs for a year now. Her garage looks like a wholesale club.

Yay! I had a feeling it would go this way. The war against this stupidity isn’t won, but at least this skirmish went my way. I haven’t been stockpiling. So, in this, I won my bet.

But they didn’t overturn the ban. All they did was defund any enforcement.

How many manufacturers and retailers are going to want to keep making a selling a product that is still technically illegal?

Here in California, we’ve already walked off the eco-cliff. Last week, I tried finding 100 watt bulbs at the local Home Depot and they said they no longer carry them. I’m pretty sure it has to do with the state of California acting on its own and banning 100 watt bulbs.

I wonder how many light bulb manufacturers went out of business in anticipation of the ban?

Suspension is not nearly enough.

Was the 55 mph speed limit suspended?

Of course, they couldn’t be bothered to do this until after the last American manufacturer shut down their production line.

I despise those sqiggly florescent light bulbs for reading by. I stocked up on GE Reveal full spectrum bulbs but did not go overboard.

Now if they would also allow us to buy toilets that work properly and don’t need to be cleaned daily because they hold virtually no water in them. That’s another favorite example of government micromanagement of our lives.

I am sure organized crime is disappointed as contraband light bulbs could have been a hot product for bootlegging along with cigarettes and high flow toilets.

Political posturing. How many manufacturers are now equipped to produce these two weeks before the ban was to go into effect? And how confident are they that it won’t return anytime soon?

Thanks, Republicans — too little, too late.
