Rick Perry rebound in Iowa: Assisted by veterans?
Polls show Rick Perry gaining ground and Newt Gingrich weakening in Iowa. Why Rick Perry may be picking up the vet vote.
By Liz Marlantes, DCDecoder / December 14, 2011
Lots of news stories today about how the race to win Iowa is still wide open. The New York Times Nate Silver takes a whirl through the polling data and says any of five candidates could plausibly win. And Politicos Maggie Haberman reports that internal poll numbers from the Mitt Romney and Rick Perry camps show Newt Gingrichs lead in Iowa is indeed slipping.
Interestingly, she also quotes a veteran GOP caucus-watcher as saying:
Watch Rick Perry. Hes going for a top three finish, and that could be to Romneys expense.
Weve found ourselves wondering about Perry, whos kicking off a 42-city Iowa bus tour today. Notably, two recent Iowa polls have shown a slight uptick in Perrys support. In particular, an American Research Group (ARG) poll released yesterday (Tuesday) showed him gaining 8 points...
...And despite some intense Internet mockery, Perrys Strong ad - where he criticizes the fact that gay soldiers can serve openly in the military while children cant celebrate Christmas in school - may be generating some traction in the state.
In particular, Decoder is now wondering if the ads appeal was actually two-fold - going beyond Christian conservatives to another potentially powerful voting bloc: veterans...

he criticizes the fact that gay soldiers can serve openly in the military while children cant celebrate Christmas in school - may be generating some traction in the state. And there's not a damn thing wrong with him noting that fact. Welcome back Rick! Go for the throats.

I have no loyalties. My vote can be lobbied by the following three candidates: Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann or Rick Santorum.

When is the primary where you vote?
To: smoothsailing
Perry got right in Obama's face on the tarmac in Texas a few months back. He took it right to the boy kings face.
As far as the veterans? He has had them behind him from the beginning.
To: smoothsailing
If Iowans give us Paul, Newt, or Romney, these primary voters should be considered morons, and Republican candidates should skip the Iowa caucuses next time around.

Veterans along with households with veterans maybe sway 20% of the conservative vote. The Pew typology survey put “Enterprisers”...essentially Reagan Republicans...as most likely to have served. Maybe this is a good strategy short term but Perry is no Reagan. Who actually supported Reagan in 1976..Paul did, perhaps Newt...that’s about it I think.

What mylife said, “March 6.” It may or may not be critical by then. However, it’s early enough that it could make a difference.

What mylife said, March 6.Bachmann and Santorum will most likely be gone by then, so I'm marking you down as a Perry vote. :)
To: Steelfish
Sure hope so. It’s starting to look good.
To: smoothsailing
Kind of funny using that graphic. If you remember, Rommel (or at least “Rommel’s plan”) was in the process of getting his ass kicked when Patton says that. Hmmm...

Kind of funny using that graphic. There is a subtle irony to it, but Patton isn't running for President. :)
Patton was complimenting Rommel on his strategy and tactics, IIRC. "Rommel, you magnificent bastard, I read your book!"
To: mylife
If we don’t have a clear nominee and Perry’s still haning around, chalk me up then. If it’s Gingrich and Romney, I’ll have to hold my nose and vote.
