TAMPA Shootings at Ybor City clubs and recent fatal gunfights in East Tampa alarmed police. Chief Jane Castor called for a community meeting.
So many young men have been losing their lives in the senseless shootings, she said. In the past two months, four have died.
And compounding it all, she said: In Florida, guns are readily available. So the group decided on its first move a gun buy-back program.
The Tampa Bay Lightning donated $12,500, which will be handed out Saturday. Organizers will pay $50 for each gun brought to the Seminole Heights Baptist Church.
There's a long-standing debate about whether gun buy-backs work. Castor knows she'll have critics, but has hope.
"The criminals may not be willing to bring their guns," Castor said at a Tuesday news conference. "But their family members may."

Still waiting for all those criminals to bring in their guns for buyback!
Why not buy back cigarettes as well, because we all know they are killers too.
Chief Jane Castor is a liar. (As are all hoplophobic communists).
teens will steal the piece from mama’s dresser to buy drugs..
Well, lookey lookey ...
Comunist hoplophobic fake Christians.
How a bout a commonsense buy-back for gun-control idiots who don’t use theirs?
More guns in the hands of law abiding citizens equals less crime. This is NOT a difficult concept to understand is it?
Barak Obama scared America into buy millions of extra guns and the crime rate didn’t go up, but this dingbat thinks taking a few hundred guns off the streets will do the trick.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Gun crime = throw away the key. Why this is even debated in a civil society is that it might cost some bottom-feeder votes.
Kristen Gillebrand just proposed more “gun law” in NY state. God help her if she ever might need them.
Gun by-backs never do a thing except pay criminals money for old guns so they can buy new ones. Crime statistics never change after a gun buy back. Just a waste of money and time.
“Stupid is as stupid does.”
Hardly!
Castor is probably related to Betty Castor, A.K.A Betty Boop in education circles. Not dumb, just commie at heart.
The ever suffering taxpayer will pay for the purchases, the cop overtime, ad nauseam.
THEN, Captain Cop gets to sort through the pile for the good guns.

Seems like common sense to those of us who possess the trait. Somehow, the whole concept of it escapes progressives. They can’t get their heads around the concept that laws forbidding criminals from having guns don’t deter them. Uh, they’re criminals as in they are predisposed towards BREAKING any and all laws. More laws, asinine gun buy-backs, and trampling on the rights of non-criminal citizens just won’t help - no matter how many times you try it. They might want to read up on Einstein’s definition of insanity...
Love the statement the Chief made about the availability of guns in FL. Of course, left unsaid is the fact that all those armed law-abiding citizens have caused a drop in criminal activity as gun-owners do the job that report-writing cops can’t/won’t do.
Yet another “gun buy back”. LOL!
$50! Fifty bucks! Are them folks peoples out of their ever loving minds. For fifty bucks, I wouldn’t even give them my 60 year old Saturday Night Special. Don’t they know that this is 2011 not 1950? Sheesh what cheap skates.
All of them are Holders People.
This Buy-Back won't accomplish anything substantive.
incentives for new burglaries. Break down a door and get a prize. How generous.
How do they buy back guns without an FFL?
