Serbs opposed to the independence of Kosovo attacked North Atlantic Treaty Organization peacekeeping troops in the tiny Balkan state Monday with guns and Molotov cocktails, wounding dozens, the alliance said, in an escalation of violence that could set back Belgrade's long-running effort to join the European Union.

How far back prior?

The following table illustrating Kosovo's demography through the years is culled from Appendix A of "Kosovo: how myths and truths started a war", by Julie Mertus.

1838 data "Muslim" carried as Albanian.
1905 data "Albanized Muslim Serb" carried as Albanian.
Other minorities omitted for simplicity's sake.

YEAR Serb Muslim
1838 42% 58%
1905 33% 66%
1921 21% 66%
1931 27% 60%
1939 33% 54%
1948 24% 68%
1953 24% 65%
1961 24% 67%
1971 18% 74%
1981 13% 77%
1991 10% 82%

As to present conditions, it remains unknown, as the 2011 census in Kosovo was boycotted by the Serbs in the North, but 10% is probably ball park correct, if a little on the high side.

Thanks! Looks like percent of Serbs in Kosovo had declined long before the NATO involvement.

Serbia's not going to be using a military option on anybody anytime soon, and if you're worried about NATO or the EU's condition, you might want to check up on how Belgrade's set for prospective confrontations: landlocked by nations hostile to any resurgent Serbian militarism, and without a military capable of turning any dreams of conquest into reality.

Everybody's best hope is to reunite under EU auspices as a part of NATO. If the Germans and the French (or the Germans and the Poles, for that matter) can get along, then the Serbs and their neighbors should be able to as well.

Cote D’Ivoire is over 3,000 miles from Uganda/Kenya/South Sudan area where the troops are actually headed.

The name Cote D’Ivoire is not a Muzzie name it is simply “Ivory Coast” in French.

Tim Judah's "Kosovo: War and Revenge" is a good primer, if you're really interested.

Really?....You might also want to look at Judah's book: The Serbs: History, Myth & the Destruction of Yugoslavia.

In short, I don't think either Judah's or my (overall) point of view would be consistent with yours, Hoplite.

It is the new in vogue name the media uses. obama did send troops there... less than 10 but they are there and 5.5 billion dollars too. Ruthless murdering regime.
