America Before The Entitlement State

...In the 19th century, even though capitalism had only existed for a short time, and had just started putting a dent in pre-capitalism’s legacy of poverty, the vast, vast majority of Americans were already able to support their own lives through their own productive work. Only a tiny fraction of a sliver of a minority depended on assistance and aid–and there was no shortage of aid available to help that minority.

...

“Those in need,” historian Walter Trattner writes, “. . . looked first to family, kin, and neighbors for aid, including the landlord, who sometimes deferred the rent; the local butcher or grocer, who frequently carried them for a while by allowing bills to go unpaid; and the local saloonkeeper, who often came to their aid by providing loans and outright gifts, including free meals and, on occasion, temporary jobs. Next, the needy sought assistance from various agencies in the community–those of their own devising, such as churches or religious groups, social and fraternal associations, mutual aid societies, local ethnic groups, and trade unions.”

One of the most fascinating phenomena to arise during this time were mutual aid societies–organizations that let people insure against the very risks that entitlement programs would later claim to address. These societies were not charities, but private associations of individuals. Those who chose to join would voluntarily pay membership dues in return for a defined schedule of benefits, which, depending on the society, could include life insurance, permanent disability, sickness and accident, old-age, or funeral benefits.

Mutual aid societies weren’t private precursors to the entitlement state, with its one-size-fits-all schemes like Social Security and Medicare...

People have learned not to have faith in God, themselves and their fellow man as the state has replaced them.

One can only shudder at the idea of going back to those horrible days of *gasp* self-reliance.

I can’t read stuff like this. Its too depressing when you consider where we are now.

This is why libertarians and social conservatives ought to be a natural coalition. Unfortunately, it’s also something a lot of people in both groups don’t understand.

You can’t really have freedom from the state without a well-functioning society with healthy institutions. And you can’t have a healthy society based on traditional values and institutions when the state gets involved in people’s daily lives.

" But we won’t get rid of the entitlement state until we get rid of today’s widespread entitlement mentality, and return to a society in which individual responsibility is the watchword." - Forbes

Or, as we might revise the statement:

"But we won't get rid of the entitlment state until we get rid of the would-be tyrants and oppressors who call themselves "progressives," while they buy the votes of some citizens by coercively taking and "redistributing" the hard-earned dollars of their fellow citizens."

Being ignorant of this change is the gulf between democrats and republicans...
Two different visions of America.. not taught in any school..

Republicans should address this “blindness” head on.. in the light of the day..

Agree 100%. Imagine the self respect, confidence and friendships each of us would have if we took care of ourselves, took care of our families (including our parents) and took care of those not able to take care of themselves.

BTW - Everyone here should take care of Free Republic by donating! It is the hallway of friendship for conservatives.

I have a thin book about the Plymouth Colony, it’s amazing how they solved some problems. Their women had more rights than women in England at the time, they could own property, they had standing in court and could even operate a business. They were also entitled to at least a third of their husbands estate when he died, even if he tried to write her out of the will.

whenever “it” happens...whatever “it” means.....my hope and prayer is that like minded people can migrate to certain areas to associate with all those like minded people...you know who I’m talking about....the squares..the Christian...the home made soup types...the types that grow a garden and flowers just for the heck of it...

What Libertarians don’t understand is that you can’t have freedom without God and justice. Without Him we would devolve into something like the tribes of central Asia.

Liberaltarians are only interested in (legal) drugs and sex (prostitution, end of age of consent) these days.

They are natural partners for no sane people

The major concerns of most libertarians currently is the growth of the federal government and restrictions strangling the economy and business. Perhaps I could get you invited to a meeting Don’t stay at the end; that’s when everyone smokes pot and the whores show up.

Forbes Wall Street clique forget that the buying power of a person’s wages was strong. One man can support a stay home wife, buy a house, one car, and have six kids or more. They were all fed, clothed, shoed, and cared for on one factory salary. Office workers and managers were even better. Professionals even better yet. Today with two working professionals can afford two cars, one house and barely two kids. Devalued dollar, excessive gov debt, globalism and Fed Reserve with no constraint on currency against a hard asset like gold. Those who fall behind will be attracted to big gov candidates who will give them entitlements. Forbes forget that corporate CEO’s are like a boat in the ocean where the waters represent the people. If the boat creates too much turbulence, the ocean will sink the boat. Technology, free trade, globalism, crony capitalism/facism has created turbulent change in American society and the working man/family is being overwhelmed. Add to this sovereign debt, gov going broke and will break every promise. This will create a backlash in the form of the Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street. Problem is CEO’s and politicians still don’t get it, but a growing numbers are feeling the political heat or coming violence against them and their families.

It all makes you wonder: If Americans could thrive without an entitlement state a century ago, how much easier would it be today, when Americans are so rich that 95 percent of our “poor” own color TVs?

You might think so, but nowadays people want those televisions and can't live without them even if they can't afford them. Hence the "entitlement society."

It's hard for people now to realize just how little people were content with even two generations back. People also forget just how widespread farming was just 60 years back. Those who couldn't cope with the cities could often go back to the farm.

They have spent your and your grand children's money, and still you have the perry's and the newt's wishing to reward them with visas and work cards.

When I go seen a doctor I pay are they hound me to hell, an illegal walks in squirts out a baby and they say do you want wic and a wheel chair and housing to go with that. And you have people on this form wanting to vote the scum into office.

The mason’s were largely a mutual aid society.

Masonic Homes were among the first elder facilites.

They also had Women’s and childrens homes for widows.

Churches provided the first hospitals long before the government decided that healthcare was a right.

The first colleges were religious institutions.

Both parties have no clue and are corrupt.

What needs to be done to save the U.S. is :

1. Start making things in the U.S. again. That means ban or greatly reduce imports of manufactured products from China and other places. Only Pat Buchanan says this.

2. Reduce the size of government and reduce regulations on businesses. Palin, Buchanan, conservatives and Republicans say this.

3. Stop the illegal immigration invasion. Again only Pat Buchanan says this.
