Salute to FReeper Veterans; Check in!: THREAD #4
self | 11/10/11 | Righ

Posted on 11/10/2011 7:16:05 PM PST by RightOnline

[Note to all: I've finally resurrected what was a tradition here for several years on FR....the "Veterans' Check-In". Much has happened since I started this...twelve years ago. Three of my five sons are now veterans, including a Bronze Star-winning Stryker platoon leader in Iraq back during the 'surge' days (FReeper "Future Snake Eater"), a combat videographer who jumped in so young I had to sign papers to allow him to serve, and a 'grunt' from Ft. Polk who just got back from Afghanistan). God bless them, God bless you all. I've included the original text from all those years ago here.]

While splashing some coffee into my eyes in a feeble attempt to wake up (early plane to catch this AM), I still wanted to take a moment and express my...and I'm sure "our"...appreciation to all of you veterans. We salute you on this Veterans Day for your sense of duty, commitment, honor, and sacrifice. Whether you served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, or any number of other "hot spots" around the globe, may we offer our thanks and deepest respect for what you've given and helped to protect.

May God in His Heaven bless all of you, and just know that many, many of us remember. You will never be forgotten.

Take a moment and "check in" here, all you vets. It's your day. Those of us who served during "peacetime" especially salute the combat veterans; those who survived the bullets and incoming and left so many close friends behind. A special prayer to all of you today.

USAF Security Service 1960-1963. Ditty-bopped in the Philippines and Italy. Spent 33 more years as a civilian doing pretty much the same job.

Bet your dad and I were peers, time-wise....recce pilots had a very, very tough mission in those days and were largely unappreciated.

Not by me; not by many.

Give him my thanks and shake his hand for me.

Retired (2006) Air Force Master Sergeant (E-7).

Served 20 years as a Medic in AFLC (you old timers will remember the “Logistics” command) and AFMC. Did my time at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. What a great (and fast) 20 years!

2ndDivisionVet: I’ll be praying for God’s grace and healing for both you and your wife’s health. <(((><

Give him my thanks and shake his hand for me.

I'll do that when I see him for Christmas next month.

Did you ever work/live in Oak Harbor, WA, by any chance?

Thank you for your service to our great nation!

Awesome. My Dad retired in the late '60's as a Master Sergeant in the AF....back before the "super stripe" ranks were created. Swear to God in His Heaven....the man retired at 20 years, the son of a Mississippi sharecropper...high school dropout...and had 14 years time in grade as MSgt.

Yes, that Mississippi redneck dropout holds the record for the youngest MSgt. in AF history. My Dad, God rest his soul. An amazing man.

Nope...never lived in WA, although the AF (and then the computer industry) moved me all over the country.

1968 - 2003 US Army Medical Corps. Stationed stateside, & in a lifetime, I’ve gotten to meet lots of great warriors, from Spanish-American vets to current active. Just returned from 2-week drive through Normandy, started at Ste. Mere-Eglise, finished at Bastogne and Luxemburg Cemetery and Ramstein. A pause and a prayer at 1111 hrs., 11-11-11. God bless ‘em all.
