About eight men and women dressed in black, faces covered in bandannas and armed with hammers, sticks and poles had just barged down the doors of Oakland's landmark Rotunda Building -- with another dozen behind them -- when they were turned back by a tenant with a shotgun and an attitude.
This wasn't your average building employee, this was Oakland developer and building owner Phil Tagami who provided a one-man sentry for the Frank H. Ogawa Plaza building that he oversaw a $50 million renovation on in years past.
"They took a few steps forward and I racked the shotgun and they left," Tagami said Thursday, still calming from the events of the previous night. "It's sort of the universal 'Don't come any farther' sign."
And the group didn't. They high-tailed back out through the front doors and joined the raucous crowd outside.
The Oakland native and longtime mover and shaker surveyed extensive damage to the building Thursday, estimating hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, from broken windows to vandalism to destroyed property.
"It's not hyperbole to say we were under siege last night," he said.
Tagami, who worked late Wednesday, brought his shotgun from home before leaving for work -- just in case. About 10:30 p.m., as the situation deteriorated outside his building, he told the janitorial staff to leave the first floor, and pulled the security guard from his desk.
Tagami said he phoned the mayor's office and began communicating with senior staff around 10:45 p.m. voicing his concerns. Yet police were nowhere in sight, he said.

Since the Mayor of Oakland and her cowed police force -- intimidated by years of lawsuits and complaints by the Far Left -- have vacated their responsibilities, I guess somebody has to fill the vacuum.
No hate mail from me for Mr. Tagami -- just kudos and respect.

This crap will spread and you better be ready to protect yourself and your property.
Good for him.
Phil Tagami for Mayor of Oakland.
“Hope and Change”.
The rule of law has fled from Oakland. After looking at a map when this all started falling apart, I wonder how I used to practice hockey in Oakland about 2 blocks from the original occupation.
I back his right to protect his person and his property 110% as he sees fit.
It is obvious the police have been neutered by the city leadership to make token responses and arrests but only if seriously provoked.
This is a disgrace and a black eye on America and a death knell for Oakland gubamint, now under mob rule.
awesome....!!!!!
That’s freakin’ awesome. I love it.
I'm only going to say this once, step away... from the doighnuts!
Way... to go, big!
Violence is always the answer.
Those than can dish out the most are free and safe.
This is a carnival shell game; we’re given 2 believe it’s between the cops and dirt-heads —a red-herring:
Since the dirt-heads are collectivists, they’re the foot-soldiers of the state. So it’s really the cops and dirt-heads together against the private sector residents.
The Police took their time responding because they wanted to. Or they were ordered to.
It is BS to let these vandals take over a city such as Oakland. The Mayor of Oakland is as useless as teats on a boar hog, and her Police Officers are either under her orders to not respond or they are as useless as she.
If this poor man had shot someone he would be held responsible. I applaud his courage.
2 hours of rioting and vandalism and the mayors office finally says the cops are on their way??
oh yea... this would be the same group that reduced the police force about a month ago (just in time for the occupation ass hats to get crazy)
The OWS degenerates think they're going to get away with an Oakland-style riot in any Texas city, they have another think coming.
A small group of these pinko scumbags tried to mount a protest in downtown Dallas last week, and got nowhere. As I recall, DPD hauled 'em all off after they broke the front door of a Chase Bank.
I'll bet those rioters in Oakland were surprised as hell when they saw that shotgun come out. I think they know better down here.
I’m surprised the City of Oakland police didn’t respond in force. And take Mr Tagami off in cuffs.....
