Back in the Fight (Newt gaining momentum as flawed candidates stumble)
Human Events ^ | October 31, 2011 | Tony Lee

Political experts all agreed over the summer that Newt Gingrich’s candidacy was done. But Gingrich never got the message. In a volatile election cycle, Gingrich has battled his way back into contention, rising to third place in several national and state polls on the force of his ideas and breadth of knowledge of how Washington does and does not work. After nationally televised debates and local town halls, Gingrich has made voters want to give him a second look, especially after he speaks emphatically about American Exceptionalism and about bureaucrats and unelected judges who threaten to undermine it. His fundraising, endorsements and momentum have surged, and he has used his high name identification, his multiple multimedia platforms, and new technologies to get his message and ideas out.

Gingrich is back in contention, but now faces a critical point in the campaign, two months before the Iowa Caucus: Can he get voters to, as he often likes to say, be with him for the next eight years instead of merely being for him so he can emerge as chief rival to Mitt Romney? Part of Gingrich’s appeal is that voters feel comfortable that he would be more than capable of intellectually handling the demands of the presidency. In a wide-ranging interview with HUMAN EVENTS, Gingrich spoke about the issues and ideas of the day and about his candidacy.

Do you know the difference between and echo and an observation?

Are you happy with his half-dozen responses and updates?

I don’t think he did anything wrong, back when, as I’m aware how these nuisance lawsuits work...you file them and collect $35k, as that’s been the “settlement price” for years.

It’s his damage control response that undermines confidence in his ability to manage a crisis.

I’ve been saying this for a while.. 2012 for the R’s is shaping up to be similar to 2008 on the dems.

In 2008 whoever was the last one standing vs Hillary was going to get support by the anti-clinton wing and have a strong chance at the canidacy. In 2008 that was a laughable joke that everyone ignored until all the other rivals had bloodied each other up, so he was the last man standing able to capitalize on the anti-clinton wing.

2012 the R’s find themselves in a similar situation, Romney is the “heir apparent” and he stinks to high heaven to most of the conservative base, who have created an anyone but Romney contingent. These folks have bounced from person to person, finding out along the way that their “conservative” pic has been less than stellar... Bachman, Perry and yes, even though not admitting it yet, Cain too. While all this has been going on Newt has been quietly and slowly building his organization and support and while Newt isn’t perfect, at this point I say he’s very likely to be the last man standing against Romney.

I personally don’t see how Romney gets the nomination, RomneyCare is the antithesis of conservatism.. the notion you can be forced to buy a product, or punished by government for simply breathing???? That’s not conservative.. yet not only did this guy sign the legislation, he helped sculpt and pushed it.. and lets not even get into his flip flopping on countless other conservative things.

If it comes down to Newt v Romney, I see Newt as the nominee, he is far smarter and politically able than anyone else in the R crowd. Is he perfect? Nope.. but to see him debating Romper Room will be entertaining as hell.. it will be even better than Cheney schooling Edwards.

Time will tell if I am right, but the way things are going right now, I see Newt as the last man standing vs Mitt.. I know some conservatives are backing Cain and he’s saying things they like to hear, but I think the wheels will fall off of him soon, and the crowd that bounced to him, will bounce to the next one in line.

State-controlled media tells you what they want you do know, and you accept it.

End of story.

How come none of you Newt bashers have seen his more recent whacks at Gore on the fraud of AGW?

I’m not a Newt basher. How come none of you Newt sycophants can provide information on his recanting of cap&trade and AGW?

Newt’s flaws have been exposed for years.

True, and every thread with the words "Newt" or "Gingrich" initiates the Pavlovian, never ending reaction, with screeching BAGGAGE!.

Newt has baggage (as does everyone), but he’s the most serious candidate, the most articulate, and the most prepared to wage a large scale political battle with Obama. I don’t view Newt as a bad person. He’s got a huge ego....but anyone who seeks the office of president has one.

Everyone who thinks Newt Gingrich was elected Speaker of the House in 1995 because he was an anti-establishment, strict constructionist, small government, outside the beltway, rogue conservative raise your hand.

Cain is the flavor of the month - nothing more.

Ah yes, I heard this was the MSM's talking point. Now that I know where you get your opinions, well...

And Newt is a lying opportunist scumbag who will sell you out at the drop of a hat.

And that is his strength, everyone knows this. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

He has too much baggage. He’s also to wonkish to be a chief executive. He likes to hear himself talk too much.

He can, at once, have two or three or four opinions (and so-called solutions) on the same issue.

He also likes to put his finger in the wind to see which way it’s blowing. That’s not a leader. Thus he was willing to help Clinton reform healthcare and wanted to work with Pelosi (only a moron would want to work with that twit) on the global warming hoax.

Newt isn’t even on my radar.

I have a masters degree in economics and the idea of a “carbon” tax is worse than a VAT tax IMO.

It would be hidden and added on to every level of consumption from extraction to wholesale to retail.

Besides, define “carbon” as it pertains to a tax. Would gasoline be taxed the same as a soft drink? Dry ice? Pellet gun cartridges?

And payroll taxes are, technically (we all know better), insurance premiums as defined by the Social Security and Medicare acts.

That is very good. He does have a good grasp of the facts then. Bookmarked in my Global Warming folder.

He does not repudiate the idea that Global Warming/Climate Change might be happening or is caused by man though. More importantly; why hasn't he made a more public statement repudiating AGW and cap&trade that would make his position as well known as his nationally televised ad with Nanzi Pelozi?
