New risk for Occupy Wall Street: less media interest

NEW YORK (Reuters) - "Occupy Wall Street" is occupying less space in TV broadcasts, newspapers and social media as the story settles into a familiar pattern and protesters dig in for what could be a protracted fight.

While the movement's reliance on Twitter and Facebook to spread its message is well established, it has also benefited from becoming a media curiosity, at times drawing legions of TV crews and reporters to its encampments. Coverage fed on itself, as more people joined in more cities.

But experts say the protests are now making a natural -- yet challenging -- progression off the front page and cable news, as new events like the death of Muammar Gaddafi take prominence.

Any loss of the limelight, especially when the onset of cold weather has already started to reduce the ranks of protesters prepared to camp out overnight in lower Manhattan, could dampen the momentum of the movement.

...

"People know what the general storyline is," said Senia Barragan, a protester from New Jersey acting as a spokeswoman .. "I think they're moving on to other stories."

The loss of media interest is the latest roadblock to Occupy's momentum.

Experts on social movements have said the protesters need a "second act" of sorts as fatigue sets in and as cold weather starts to descend on New York and other protest sites.

In the days leading up to a series of worldwide protests on October 15, there were practically as many reporters as occupiers at Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan -- to the consternation of some protesters, who started charging to have their pictures taken.

But with more than five weeks gone since the concrete plaza was first taken, the media's fascination with the story has started to wane.

BINGO. Blaming wall Street for your predicament is like obama blaming Bush for the joblessness. I hope these idiots freeze in the wintertime.

Watch out — now the “demonstrators” will be looking for more spectacular stunts. Perhaps some rage and riots to get back into the limelight?

I have an idea. Why don’t they douse themselves with gasoline and light themselves on fire?

This isn’t going away so easy. Too many ‘Rat politicians have hitched on to their “message” and used it as a way to help Obama’s campaign against the big evil bankers(Obama donors).

They are going to get all sorts of professional (media, political, PR firms etc..) advise on how to stay in the limelight. The media will make sure that this is a “success” for these Occupy freaks.

Being ignored while sitting in a tent in subfreezing temps, falling snow and pounding drums is no way to go through a winter. The OWS losers have taken a very big bite and now realize they have to figure out a way to swallow.

Based on my FaceBook feed, OWS is mostly an object of ridicule—even among my more liberal friends.

News viewers have tired of the gushing wall-to-wall coverage of the public pooping and drum circle.

The media isn't covering it any more because when they were covering it, it just showed how profoundly ignorant the huge majority of the protesters really were.

I heard the first negative story today and it was scathing. The reporter was asking people when they last showered, talked about the smell a block away, mentioned she was propositioned, and that the majority looked high or mentally ill.

Agreed this bunch won’t spend the winter outside being a public pain in the butt . I stated back in late September that this would fizzle due to the timing & that these folks have no idea what is required for a winter campaign . Look for attempts to get back in the spotlight thru the use of violence in the3 next 10-14 days then they will go home & get reorganized over the winter.

“pray for rain...”

Lots and lots of rain, wind, cold, and let it snow, let it snow, let it snow -— hard!
