1 Soda A Day Equals 50 Pounds Of Sugar A Year, Says NYC Health Department October 25, 2011 10:04 AM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The New York City Health Department is launching a new campaign to show just how much sugar is in a can of soda.

The health department says drinking one soda a day equals 50 pounds of sugar a year, which can lead to problems like obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

“Sugary drinks are the largest single source of added sugar in the diet, and a child’s risk of obesity increases with every additional daily serving of a sugary drink,” said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley in a statement.

Cathy Nonas, director of the city’s physical activity and nutrition program, says that 50 pounds of extra sugar can be harmful to the body.

“When we’re looking at a city where there is an epidemic of overweight and obesity and we look at the diseases that are associated with obesity, even in young kids, 50 pounds of sugar a year, of added sugar to rest of the diet, is way too much,” Nonas told 1010 WINS.

I’m not terribly bothered when government agencies report the facts, and enable people to make good decisions.

I’m bothered when the government regulates in a way that distorts good decision making, like subsidizing the HFCS that soda pop actually contains instead of sugar.

First they came for the smokers and you said nothing because you didn’t smoke...then they came for the salt users and again you said nothing...then the runny eggs, rare steaks, lightbulbs, flush toilets...now they’re coming for YOU.

They must be basing it on a 16 oz soda.

Their figures are more or less correct though, given that an average soda is about 13+% sugar by weight.

In unrelated news - NYC Health Department fails at math.

Coke has ~40 Grams of sugar in a 12 oz can
X 365 days a year
÷ 454 grams/lb
= 32 lbs

Granted 32 lbs of sugar is still alot (and I was liberally rounding) but it’s about 20lb short of 50

“I’m not terribly bothered when government agencies report the facts, and enable people to make good decisions.”

I agree with you. Having said that, I think it’s really important for people struggling with their weight to remember that changing just one thing in your diet, and sticking with it, can have huge effects over time.

50 pounds / 365 days = 2.19 ounces per day or 62.14 grams per day. At 4 calories per gram, that can of soda would have 248 calories. Now the typical 12 ounce can has about 150 calories. Sounds like someone is either fudging their numbers or counting 20 ounce bottles the same as 12 ounce cans.

So 2.2oz of a 12oz soda are sugar? ((50lbs * 16oz/lb)/365 days per year)

These people are IDIOTS.

While I do agree people should cut down on the sugary drinks what business is it of NYC to tell anyone what they should or should not eat or drink. This country is still one where we are FREE to make our own decisions is it not??

That number makes sense only in the context of total sugar consumption.

The New York City Health Department is launching a new campaign...

uhhh....shouldn't they be down at the Occupy Wall Street protests cleaning up all the pee & poop? That's a bigger health risk than a can of Sprite.

Sure, 50 lbs sounds like a lot, but when you break it down it’s only like a can of pop a day.
