San Francisco Waiters Push for 25% Tips

Head up guys, 15% of the meal I DO buy is a much better return than 25% of the meal I don’t buy. And in this economy fancy meals are pretty low on my list of priorities.

I was a waiter and now I tip well —I enjoy it. If I knew that I HAD to tip, I would certainly not enter the establishment.

Diverse people tip most poorly, it’s true and I heard that the donations to Diverse Universities (like Howard) do not come from Diverse people, instead it’s liberal Jews who give to those Universities, to keep them going.

That’s also a pattern in organ donation.

Then you must have an opinion of the practice of averaging tips among the wait staff. Personally, I think it's unfair to the best performers and just one more movement toward collectivism.

I think this is a good idea. Make those greedy San Francisco liberals pay their fair share so those poor waiters can afford food for themselves!

I worked at ONE place that did that. I will NEVER WORK AT A PLACE THAT ‘SHARES’ TIPS AGAIN........

I’ve tipped anywhere from nothing to more than what the meal cost depending on the server and the service.

I really resent the set ‘standard’, it’s my prerogative to give you whatever I feel your service is worth.

a tip is a gift in gratitude for services rendered.

My solution to this little scheme would be to make every effort to eat anywhere else but San Fran. I may just be a rebel and am getting old and cranky but I dig my heels in at anything “mandatory”. Fight it tooth and nail out of principle lol

Got told by a bartender to leave once, I pushed him for a reason which he wouldn’t give, a friend asked him why he kicked me out, the bartender told my friend “because I didn’t tip” there’s a reason I didn’t tip, I hardly ever tip unless someone REALLY deserves it. I think it was an 8 dollar drink and the bartender took forever to get to me, and forever to get my drink. Also got treated badly by other bartenders for NOT TIPPING, what a joke, you make money if you rely on tips you better be WEARING A SMILE ALWAYS BEING FRIENDLY EXCELLENT SERVICE. I think tipping is a joke, I don’t get tipped by anyone for any customer service I do, in fact I’m not allowed to accept tips if a customer tips me. Most of the customer service people in the industry feel like they are entitled to tips, I as a customer just paid their employer for the meal, services, I don’t like feeling that I HAVE TO TIP ANYONE, even if they provide excellent service, as far as I’m concerned they already are being paid for doing their job. Call me stingy, call me an A$$HOLE, but I’m not going to pay someone extra for what they are already paid to do. I’m certainly not going to tip you if you treat me badly and give me terrible service for NOT TIPPING you in the past when you’ve given me shitty service.

I would ask, “do they force you to share tips”?

Then I slip it into her pocket and tell her, not to let it get out of her pocket.

I hate that. I want to reward people for treating me well and giving me good service.

I’ve tipped FedEx people before. Was a great way to ensure that all my packages got to their destination intact. :)

My rule of thumb for tipping
Breakfast & Lunch 10-15% (depending on the service and food)
Dinner 15-20%

Every once in a while I have an outstanding experience and over tip...but the service & food have to be excellent.

Forcing folks to pay 25% for crappy service will put a restaurant out of business FAST!

I’m with you in regard to the “shared” tips. If you’ve got busboys and barbacks, I understand the bar and wait staff tipping them, but not the pooled tipping that I’ve seen in some places. Thankfully I never waited tables or tended bar in any place with that policy.

When I worked there, I would have to take all tips and put them in a jar. At the end of shift, we would split the tips. There were no bus boys, we bussed our own tables. I would be flirty and nice, especially to middle aged women and very respectful to the middle aged guys. I was 17-18 at the time. I would get lots of tips, and the others, male an female wait staff, would just be kinda sullen and servile and not get many tips. Never again will I ‘share’ my earned money with a person that does not deserve it..............

Avoid eating out in Europe then. Lots of places there include a service charge in the bill. In French the term service compris (service included) is used. A few rare places in the US include service on a food bill but it would take quite a search to find them.

We didn’t have any bus staff then, we had to bus our own tables. I didn’t work there long, maybe a couple months. Then I went to a place that did not share tips..........I have no idea how that ever got started. This was 1970-1973.....
