San Francisco Waiters Push for 25% Tips

Are you tipping enough when you go out to eat? The San Francisco restaurant industry apparently doesn’t think so. A column from Ed Arnow of the Contra Costa Times reports that “there’s a move on” among local restaurant workers to “make 25% the standard tip in San Francisco.” Arnow says that several “high-class restaurants” have signed on to the idea, though he doesn’t list which ones—or, for that matter, how the restaurants would impose this new standard.

Why not make it 100%?

Or even 1,000%?

I don’t often listen to Michael Savage, but I know he lives in San Fran and I know he eats out a lot. His show might be very entertaining tonight.

My old rule of thumb is 10% and round down.

Head up guys, 15% of the meal I DO buy is a much better return than 25% of the meal I don’t buy. And in this economy fancy meals are pretty low on my list of priorities.

I tip great service and sometimes I tip 25% or more. But make it a standard and all that changes.

I occasionally leave a tip of 25%—when the service is outstanding. I doubt that a waiter who thinks he’s entitled to a 25% tip is going to meet that standard.

I tip more than 20% but tipping is voluntary, if it was ever made mandatory like this? I wouldn’t go to that establishment.

What part of ‘gratuity’ do they not understand?
I don’t always ‘tip’, and especially not if the service was under par for the type of restaurant.
And I extremely dislike ‘mandatory gratuities’.....what an oxymoron THAT is!......

And I WAS a waiter at one time in my life.........when Nixon was President............

Sounds like hotel room service where they automatically add a $5 delivery charge plus 20% service charge. And they leave space on the tab for an additional gratuity. Good luck with that!

Typical Marxist thinking - if you can’t get what you want from the free market...force it on people!

I have lived in the Bay Area for 45 years. I never go even near San Freakcisco except under extreme duress.

The insanity and stench of anti-American liberalism that come out of that haven for the losers is intolerable. If you were to line up the management of that “city” and look at both who and what they are, it is shocking. Of course you need to put Pelosi in their too.

The political rectum of California.

There’s a drive thru (only) burger joint here in town that has a ‘tip jar’ on the drive thru shelf with a sign that says “Tipping is not a city in China.”........

I’m gonna try and see if my boss will tip me 25% each time i complete a task. Yeah, that’s gonna go over well.

The whole point of a tip is to reward for good service what incentive will a waiter have to give good service if the tip is mandatory. When I was a bartender in college I honestly felt awkward receiving tips. I felt like some sort of beggar. It’s an awkward type of job to have. But tipping is getting out of hand you go to a deli or a sandwich shop and there are tip jars.

As a business owner id prefer to pay my employees slightly more than put my customers in an awkward position especially when a lot of people don’t carry cash anymore.

Hey Vaseline prices have skyrocketed as the cost of oil rises, so can you blame them?

If it’s mandatory, it’s not a tip, it’s a service fee, and an enterprising tax collector could argue that sales tax should be applied.

A crusty customer could argue that he price on the menu must include the fee or rather that the restaurant provide the meal for exactly the price on the menu.
