Romney tells conservative voters that “poisonous language” doesn’t advance their cause

WASHINGTON - Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney told conservative and evangelical voters today that “poisonous language doesn’t advance our cause,” the day after a surrogate for another GOP presidential candidate described Mormonism as a cult.

“It’s never softened a single heart or changed a single mind,” Romney said. “The blessings of faith carry the responsibility of civil and respectful debate.”

Romney’s comments at the Values Voter Summit in Washington were aimed at a conservative radio commentator who immediately followed him on the program, according to a spokeswoman.

But the backdrop was a controversy from the previous day when a Texas pastor, Robert Jeffress, gave an interview in which he said that Mormonism was not a Christian faith and was a cult. He had made similar comments in the 2008 presidential election. As before, the comments immediately caused a stir.

Yesterday’s comments were notable because the pastor delivered the comments shortly after introducing another GOP presidential contender, Texas Governor Rick Perry, raising questions over whether Perry knew that his surrogate was about to attack his competitor’s religion.

Perry told a reporter in Iowa that he did not agree with Jeffress.

Maybe Mitt needs to clean up his own act before he starts instructing others.

"Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is criticizing rival Rick Perry for what he calls "offensive" language in the name of a Texas hunting camp his family once leased. Romney told Sean Hannity's radio show Monday that he found the camp's name, Niggerhead, inappropriate and called on Perry to address it."....Oct 3, 2011

“Poisonous language” seems to work well for the communist left in this country.

Mark Levin blasted Romney for his demagoguery on Social Security. Romney even coined a too clever by half designation for Perry’s efforts to reform Social Security out of being the Ponzi Scheme it is...Romney warned Seniors against a “Perry Scheme” on SS.

Romney is a snake. Poisonous language? Didn’t he just use it condemning Perry for something HE didn’t do. I think so.

Romney the RINO needs to clean out his closet before he looks in someone elses.

ah poor little Romnuts got his feelings hurt.

But hey Gov Perry has been attack viciously over his Christian Faith.

It is not my place to question anyones faith. But here is some info on Mormons. FYI-period.

According to Bruce McConkie, a general authority of the LDS Church, “Mormonism is indistinguishable from Christianity.”[29] In many ways, however, the religion differs from orthodoxy as held by Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Christianity. To those for whom Christianity is defined by that orthodoxy, Mormonism’s differences place it outside the umbrella of Christianity altogether.[30][31]

Since its beginnings, the faith has proclaimed itself to be Christ’s Church restored with its original authority, structure and power; maintaining that existing denominations believed incorrect doctrines and were not acknowledged of God as his church and kingdom.[32] Though the religion quickly gained a large following of Christian seekers, in the 1830s, many American Christians came to view the church’s early doctrines and practices[33] as politically and culturally subversive. This discord led to a series of sometimes-deadly conflicts between Mormons and other Christians.[34] Although such violence has declined in the last century, the religion’s unique doctrinal views and practices still generate criticism, as well as efforts by Mormons and other Christians to proselytize each other.

Mormons believe in Jesus Christ as the literal firstborn Son of God and Messiah, his crucifixion as a conclusion of a sin offering, and subsequent resurrection.[35] However, Latter-day Saints (LDS) reject the ecumenical creeds and definition of the Trinity taught by the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Anglican Communion, and Trinitarian Protestantism,[36][37] and hold that the New Testament prophesied both the apostasy from the teachings of Christ and his apostles as well as the restoration of all things prior to the second coming of Christ.[38]

Some notable differences with mainstream Christianity include: A belief that Jesus began his atonement from sin in the garden of Gethsemane and continued it to his crucifixion, rather than the orthodox belief that the crucifixion alone was the physical atonement;[39] division of heaven into three degrees of glory, with hell (often called spirit prison) being a temporary repository for the wicked between death and the resurrection.[40] Additionally, Mormons don’t believe in creation ex nihilo, believing that matter is eternal, and that God organizes existing matter.[41]

Much of the Mormon belief system is oriented geographically around the North and South American continents. Mormons believe the people of the Book of Mormon lived in the western hemisphere, that Christ appeared in the western hemisphere after his death and resurrection, that the true faith was restored in upstate New York by Joseph Smith, and that the Garden of Eden and location of Christ’s second coming were and will be in the state of Missouri. For this and other reasons, including a belief by many Mormons in American exceptionalism, Molly Worthen speculates that this may be why Leo Tolstoy described Mormonism as the “quintessential ‘American religion’”.[42]

>>>>>>>.. former US Secretary of Education William Bennett..
“Do not give voice to bigotry. Do not give voice to bigotry,” he said, eliciting applause from the audience, then quoted George Washington: “despise all forms of racial and religious bigotry.”

Its not bigotry to state that Mormonism is not a form of Christianity. Its the truth. More importantly, Romney remains a phony and a fraud. Republicans can do better then to nominate this NE liberal. Conservatives want a nominee who agrees with them on most issues with a record to prove it. Not someone who places expediency over principle, or rhetoric over substance.

One man’s opinion about Mormonism does not “poison” the well of Conservativism.

I strongly disagree with Mormonism.

The way this one man expressed it represents himself, nobody else.

I don’t express my disagreement with Mormonism using his words.

Therefore, I’m not any part of whatever wording is being referenced, and his words reflect not a whit on Conservative speech.

Romney isn’t one entitled to talk about the wrong use of language, as he scares Seniors with demogogic words on Perry and Social Security.

And refuses to admit the true words that it is a Ponzi Scheme.

And as CW showed, he joined in with demagoging words about a stupid rock controversy that was ginned up out of nothing by a WP smear piece.

The Voter Values is a delicate balance between believers who are politically active. Pastor Jeffress should have been a bit more politically astute. Bennett was right that Jeffress did Rick Perry no good.

I do wish that Romney had not pointed out that one of the speakers who was to follow him (Bryan Fischer) was an example of hate.

Uh, oh. That isn't going to go over well with the Mormon haters here.
