...the in-state tuition debate isnt really about tuition at all its about amnesty. First of all, the DREAM Act moniker is borrowed from proposed federal legislation which would have legalized certain illegal aliens brought here before their 16th birthday an amnesty, in other words. The state-level DREAM Acts are just efforts at creating momentum and awareness for the amnesty legislation.
The problem with this, of course, is that once they graduate with this taxpayer-subsidized education, theyre still illegal aliens and so its illegal to hire them. (The stuff about pursuing citizenship is meaningless chaff theres no such thing for people in this situation.) Theyre not going to make our country better or go on to create money for the economy or be contributing members in the state of Texas if theyre still illegal aliens.

Now, maybe theres an argument to be made for legalizing certain illegal aliens brought here at a very young age whose identities were formed here and who know no other country. Actually, Ive made that very argument many times. But if were going to debate amnesty for people in this situation, then lets debate amnesty. Arguing for in-state tuition for illegal aliens without making plain that the real objective is legal status is incomplete at best, dishonest at worst.

yep.
Well, actually it’s about where the student resides physically. If you live in Virginia for a certain period, you pay in-state tuition in Va.
What I’m finding is that most Perry supporters here on FR are also amnesty supporters.
Yes they are as is their hero Rick Perry.
>>Well, actually its about where the student resides physically. If you live in Virginia for a certain period, you pay in-state tuition in Va.<<
There is a difference between LEGAL and ILLEGAL, however.
Does anybody really think a school will follow up on the dream act student seeking citizenship and if not what will do about it, nothing.
"Arguing for in-state tuition for illegal aliens without making plain that the real objective is legal status is incomplete at best, dishonest at worst. "
The same argument can be made that if an ILLEGAL alien robbed a bank and he and his family lived a lavish lifestyle with his ill-gotten gains it would be wrong to take his assets from him because, after all, the only home his kids have known is the one the robber paid for with stolen loot.
ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL.
“ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL. “
I agree with you 100%
“theyre still illegal aliens and so its illegal to hire them.”
Maybe that is why Texas colleges have students that have taken advantage of the reduced in-state rates to the tune of 1% of total enrollment?
Sounds like the illegals are stampeding the border to pay $40,000 to $80,000 for this government hand out.
We have massive unemployment, we need jobs, we need business regulation reform, we need to stop the EPA and suddenly it's "Oh look! A shiny object" and everyone goes off chasing a 10 year old law.
This is just not true.
It's more that they are politically savvy enough to understand that a majority of the country will not support deporting young adults brought here as infants to countries they have no connection to other than by genetics. If you want to actually solve the problem it needs to be at the point of employment.
Not in the eyes of the state. LEGAL and ILLEGAL are federal matters. If the feds say they can stay illegally, then they still fall under the residency rules.
America: A Nation Of Scofflaws
Federal Law Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623 states:an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State... for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit.
>>Not in the eyes of the state. LEGAL and ILLEGAL are federal matters. If the feds say they can stay illegally, then they still fall under the residency rules.<<
Did I just hear you say “if the FEDS SAY THEY CAN STAY ILLEGALLY”????
That is a contradiction and an impossibility. Either we have laws or we don’t. Either they are LEGAL or ILLEGAL.
There is no such things as “ILLEGAL YET LEGAL.”
The Feds CANNOT at the same time say they are illegal, yet can stay illegally.
It is a shame to see people like you twist yourself into pretzels to defend the indefensible.
And if you say that states cannot make a distinction between an illegal and a legal resident, you are an idiot. Else how come Texas cities are cracking down on illegal residents?
Wake up!!!!!! Attitudes like yours are why America is dying. Disgraceful.
The terms for colleges vary...but how many states turn illegals away??
Hell, here in NYS, in my hometown, only 40% graduate from high school. And college...we don't ask status...just residency.
Tell that to AppyPappy.
Apparently in his eyes, laws were made to be broken. No big deal, so long as Hispandering Perry gets the presidency.
Shameful.
>>Every illegal is guaranteed BY FEDERAL LAW, an education from k-12th.<<
Yes, terrible laws have been passed which are destroying our country. Obamacare is another example.
There are fools who salute such assaults on the fabric of America.
There are others see the damage this is causing and want to turn it back.
