A Brooklyn rapper is drawing heat from conservative bloggers upset over a YouTube video of him rhyming about trying to use his sister's food-stamps card to buy weed and beer.
Stanley Lafleur, 24, has been called "lazy," a "leech" and the epitome of someone pimping the system since his video went viral.
In the video, Lafleur, in a leather jacket and Yankee cap, struts from a bodega to a fast-food joint swiping a government-issued Electronic Benefit Transfer card to pay for mostly candy and chips.
Rapping to a heavy beat, he even tries to used the EBT card to buy pot and beer.
"I'm never going hungry, swiping all day y'all. Sandwiches, chips, a big box of Oreos. Cereal, Kix, but I couldn't buy a 40, dog?" he waxes poetically, dancing through store aisles and up to the counter at a McDonald's.
"I wish I could buy some weed with my EBT but the drug dealer fronted me," raps Lafleur.
The video went viral and left right-wing bloggers peeved after conservative Matt Drudge posted it earlier this week on his website, Drudgereport.com.
The Conservative TreeHouse blog accused Lafleur of "celebrating the pure coolness of any and all things gotten for nothing."
The Conservativepost.com blog wrote the "video glorifies welfare." Columnist Ben Shapiro, on his popular conservative website Town Hall, described Lafleur as "the sort of leech who is bankrupting our society."
But Lafleur said people are misinterpreting his video, which has garnered nearly 280,000 views.
"I couldn't believe people are hating on me like I'm rubbing the benefit card in the face of taxpayers. They don't get it," Lafleur told the Daily News. "My video is a parody."
Sounding like a conservative himself, Lafleur explained the video is a reflection of EBT abuses he's witnessed.
"That's the whole point of my video and that's what I'm trying to stop. There's a lot of people who really need help but aren't getting it while too many are abusing the system," said the self-described "Mr. EBT."
Jermaine Gomes, who produced the video, said he was shocked by the uproar.
"It's an overnight sensation," said Gomes, who appeared with Lafleur on FOX Business Network this week in an attempt to clear the air.
"It's just amazing that some people don't get it," Gomes said. "They think it's seriously some dumb guy just using his EBT card."
I got that it was a parody right away. Lines about “this is what taxpayers pay for”
Who could forget these lyrics?
I swipe my ebt
and buy it by the pound
and when I’m buying milk
I buy it by the cow.
Timeless classic if you ask me.
If it’s just his personal food stamps, he’s unlikely to be getting more than about $200 a month. Now if fraud is involved that’s another matter.
There’s a free program in L.A. that provides free electricity as long as you are a “minority”. My close bud works for the L.A. Worksource center and this program office is right across his. The same office also provides EBT card applications. And everytime I pick him up to have lunch together, guess which ethnicity makes up 70% of the line? So no, I wouldn’t exactly know if it was a parody.
Chapter has a video on EBT, too. It’s, well, worth watching.
Poverty is not a color, though.
Stealing from others is wrong.
Hey, if you can do a better, clearer job of penning a satire about the misuse of food stamp cards, more power to ya.
Wonder if our renowned Doug From Upland would be up to the challenge.
Just an hour ago I went to show someone the EBT video only to find Youtube had removed it. Other copies have been put up but this seemed odd. We all know there’s no censorship at Youtube /sarc.
I don't about you but these manufactured "Outrages" are getting kind of old...
They are being put out there to create publicity...The Chaz Bono on "Dancing with the Stars" is a prime example of manufactured outrage. Look at the publicity the got for a few days. the Lame stream media will do or say anything for ratings or distraction.
Majority minorities. Quite an irony.
Does he at least treat you for lunch? He ought to, you paid some of those taxes.
I thought this flick and its song was completely homemade.
He is resilient and proficient.
My comment was not aimed at the Parody but at the so-called reaction. He's using this an a means to get free publicity. I could care less about the video and never heard of it until now.
He's probably got an agent pitching this to CNN, FOX or MSNBC as we are bogging about it. Notice the post pointing out that the video was pulled. You think that is going unnoticed?
This is BS. Real conservatives are not at all upset about this. They are going “see what this guy is saying?!? That’s what we’re talking about. This crap is messed up!”
Jam, damn, I juss want some jam,
Walkin’ down the isle cuz I’m lookin’ for some HAAAAAAAAAAM.
I love this guy.
What theme was this stolen from?
Ripped by conservatives?
Nah. He’s a good guy. He’s overworked right now as the amount of people who applied for unemployment has increased 1o-fold and as counselor, the unemployed simply wears him out.
And yes, those “minorities” are now the majority, and we are talking hispanic.
