YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio—President Barack Obama this week will try to launch a political comeback amid the lowest approval ratings of his presidency and a growing sense of economic foreboding here and across the country among voters who are increasingly questioning their president's skills and priorities.
A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll of 1,000 adults, taken Aug. 27-31, found that 44% of Americans approve of the job Mr. Obama is doing as president, with more than half, or 51%, disapproving for the first time since his inauguration. Some 73% say the country is headed in the wrong direction, a level of pessimism not seen since late 2008, as the financial crisis struck.
More than 70% of people surveyed said the economy hasn't yet hit bottom. Most Americans still say the president inherited the nation's economic maladies from President George W. Bush rather than caused them, although that number is slipping.
Voters appear to be looking for a new direction. By 44% to 40%, Americans now say they are more likely to vote Republican next year than for Mr. Obama's re-election. In June, the president held the edge, 45% to 40%. The president is losing support from key groups including political independents, women and Hispanics.
The 2012 race is ours to lose. Will we?

Don’t read too much into these polls.
The Left is included in the polls, as well as the right.
They both are dissatisfied with Obamugabe, but for different, and exactly opposite reasons.
So, if a pollster asks if you are satisfied with the job the president is doing, and you are a left wing lunatic, you say no, because he’s not declared himself absolute dictator-for-life yet.
So don’t think that just because his poll numbers are really low that the left will not still vote for his sorry, lazy tukus for four more years

Listening to the crazy rants of Joe Biden, Debbie Wasserman Schulz, Maxine Waters, James Hoffa, Jr., any objective person in their right mind would come to the conclusion that Obama is toast. And....so.....is most of the Democrat Party!!!! However, we good guys & gals cannot rest for one minute!!! Obama and the Democrat Party must be massively defeated, if not politically destroyed come, November, 2012!!!
It sample 1000 ADULTS...not likely voters, not registered voters, not even eligible voters...just ADULTS.
Interestingly ONLY 19% claimed the country was going in the right direction.
This poll is DISASTROUS for Obama. 11% of it was African/American, and that is his 90+% base, so that means that, other than blacks, something like 90% of the country thinks Obama has us going in the wrong direction.
Blacks and unions. Believe it or not there is also the dumb white voter who voted for him the 1st time and can’t admit they were stupid. They don’t pay attention to what he has done. All they do is listen to his speeches.
Went to a family dinner this weekend. The family is mostly conservatives. I had a cousin who blurted out that she had voted for Obama. Whoa! You could have heard a pin drop after she said that. You could feel the air sucked out of the lungs of the family. People started getting up and moving away.
It was sad, but it was funny. Even my sweet 83 year old crippled mother fired up her walker to leave the room.
My mother asked me the next day if I thought her niece knew she was wrong about Obama. I told her “no” because my niece was babbling about infrastructure after the admission.
I wonder what the 44% number actually is when adjusted for reality. 28%?
