I think the choice to use the same make of gun is in poor taste. They should have traded it in for an American-made 1911.
Imagine if instead of shooting her, Loughner had run her over with a red Corvette. Raffling off some other kind of car later would be fine. Raffling off a red Corvette would not.

Is it politically stupid? Probably.
Because it needlessly gives ammo (pardon the pun) to Democrats, to say this was a crass political statement.
