A Perry-Romney ticket could bring another Austin-Boston link (speculation)
The Houston Chronicle ^ | June 27, 2011 | Joe Holley

Posted on 08/30/2011 6:24:02 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

In the postnomination chaos of the 1960 Democratic Convention, John F. Kennedy, a Massachusetts liberal (and a Catholic to boot), realized that Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson, his erstwhile rival for the nomination, had something that he needed: entree to a then-Democratic South that was inherently suspicious of liberals and Catholics. Thus was born the Austin-Boston connection.

For JFK, that connection was a lifeline to the White House. These days, it is the GOP that may give serious consideration to a reconstituted Austin-Boston connection: A New England politician with a suspiciously moderate past (and a Mormon to boot) may come to realize that he needs what a certain Southern governor with tea party and evangelical bona fides has to offer. As in 1960, when JFK-LBJ tied together the frayed and disparate wings of the Democratic Party long enough to win the White House, Mitt Romney-Rick Perry could be just the ticket for the GOP to unite its increasingly disparate wings and make Barack Obama a one-term president.

"For a Republican Party torn between hard-money conservatives and social conservatives, it would be an intriguing way to balance the party," Texas Christian University political scientist James Riddlesperger said.

"Romney is clearly the front-runner, and depending on how (Perry) conducts his own campaign for the presidency, he's a viable vice-presidential pick," Southern Methodist University political scientist Cal Jillson said.

I would consider voting for Perry.

Perry-Romney? I'd stay home that day. Romney is on my permanent "do not vote for" list, in any configuration.

The unholy RINO alliance. The anti-Reagan to the extreme.

I could see this senario happening, but these two on a ticket would leave me completely uninspired. I hope this dull, short-sighted idea isn’t what awaits us next year.

Regardless of whom is on the feckless republican presidential ticket, you cannot stay home on voting day. The down ticket offices are the only hope we have of rescuing the Republic. Pay close attention to every spot on the ballot. Learn whom is a true conservative and whom is the typical mouthing liar politician. We have two scum seantors in Tennessee that need to be replaced with honest men or women. Bot are republicrats but both are go-along-to-get-along fools. Sadly, my congressional representative, though a physician, is just as establishment lost.

Sounds like a match made in heaven. Even so, fro what I’ve read here at FR RINO Mitt Perry’s supporters prefer a Perry/Giuliani ticket.

That would be the Reagan/Bush ticket.

Bush eventually became president, violated the Reaganite “no new taxes” pledge, and because of that, lost the election.

Hand in your analyst's license, Jim. If you think Perry/Romney unites social and fiscal conservatives, you have no idea what is going on in the Republican Party.
