State, local governments employ more than two million

California's state and local governments employed more than two million full- and part-time workers in 2010, and they were paid about $10 billion a month, a new data dump from the Census Bureau shows.

The California data were gleaned from the Census Bureau's annual census of government employment, taken in March 2010, and indicate that state and local governments are, collectively, one of the largest segments of the state's $2 trillion per year economy.

California's 2.16 million government employees translate into 1.79 million "full-time equivalent" workers, and the $9.7 billion paid to them in March 2010 translates into an average full-time salary of nearly $5,500 per month.

The state employed the full-time equivalent of 410,653 workers that month, while local governments, including schools, had the equivalent of 1.4 million employees on their payrolls. The Census Bureau noted that the state's local agencies had dropped nearly 48,000 part-time workers since the 2009 census while California's state government added 2,836 part-timers.

That’s way too many unelected bureaucrats writing stupid unconstitutional rules and regs, and ruining lives and wasting hard-earned money unnecessarily.

The only way you can survive in California is if you are:

A) A person who already has a lot of wealth.
B) A gubmint employee
C) On the public dole

If you are trying to build a middle class life you get out.

To give you an idea of how efficient our government workers are, laying off as many as 10 of California’s 410,653 state employees would necessitate closing most public libraries and parks and releasing tens of thousands of violent criminals.

How much grease is there in “administrator” salaries? Cut off the bloated porcine grip of useless assistant to the assistant superintendant positions. Closing libraries and parks hurts everyone. Nobody’s going to mourn the loss of some worthless overpaid bureaucrat.

Thanks SmithL.
in 2010, and they were paid about $10 billion a month
And remember the 90/10 rule -- 90 percent of the work gets done by 10 percent, meaning, this figure could be intelligently cut by 1,800,000, and we'd still get 90 percent of the work out of them.
