APOPKA, Fla. -- A man attempted to commit suicide at the Shoot Straight gun range in Apopka on Thursday afternoon, Apopka police said.
The man survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
The mans identity was not immediately released.
In June, a man walked into the Casselberry Shoot Straight location and took his life, police said.
Casselberry police said an Altamonte Springs man walked in and waited until there was only one other customer inside. Tommy McWilliams then sent his mother a goodbye text message and told her he loved her before shooting himself.

kind of a funny name for a place where people miss the target at that range
The guy needs more range time if he missed that bad - oh wait..
I guess the discharge of a firearm in a location unapproved by the government is worse than deciding life is not worth living any more.
I’d call them “civil minded” but that seems inappropriate considering the topic.
Exactly!
lol. I had thought that myself.
EMT friend of mine tells the story of an attempted suicide where the guy tried to blow his head off with a shotgun. Stuck it under his chin and pulled the trigger.
He must of lost his nerve at the last second as the gun moved a little forward so the barrel was closer to the front of his face. All he succeeded in doing was taking his face off. Paramedics found him with holes where his mouth, nose and eyes had been.
Suicide is a completely selfish act.
I’m glad he failed. Hopefully he can now face his problems with more courage. He needs help badly.
That’s what I was thinking. Suicide (and attempted suicide) is tragic, but I admit I laughed. I hope the guy is gonna recover.
thats an awful story. just when you think things are so bad.......they get a lot worse.
My local gun range has recently stopped renting firearms to non-gun owners for precisely this reason.
They figure that if you already own a gun, you won’t come to the range to blow your brains out.
something about “renting guns” just doesnt sound right anyway. its not like its a lawnmower or something.
Well they only wanted to use it once. If they had the money to buy a good gun they may not have found it appealing to kill themselves. ;-)
FCrom the perspective of an NRA instructor and a life long educator, ranges and/or instructors who make guns available for the new shooter help said newbie to make wise choices which encourage said newbie continuing as an active shooter.
There is no better way to decide on a gun than actually shooting one like one is considering.
As for an occasional suicide, it we have free will, that is not our choice to make. AND, to deny the many an opportunity to try a variety of guns before buying one just to prevent (make that maybe prevent) one suicide is an argument which only the Brady Bunch would be able to rationalize.
How, you may ask, can even the Brady bunch rationalize such an argument?
Correct answer: Small brains can only handle small ideas, and with little success.
Maybe they should convert one range, somewhere, and call it the Lefty, Anti-Second-Amendment Weirdo Suicide Center. Then the freaks will have somewhere to go for their stupidity.
Wonder if the reporter even noticed the guy “survived” AND “took his own life” in the same sentence.
Seems difficult.
“Maybe they should convert one range, somewhere, and call it the Lefty, Anti-Second-Amendment Weirdo Suicide Center. Then the freaks will have somewhere to go for their stupidity.”
Or perhaps they could just let them wander down range.
It would be quite the draw in some circles.
It’s actually kind of cool to be able to rent. Sometimes I’m in the mood to shoot something that I don’t own.
My range has a good selection
well said. felt the same and got a chuckle too. hope this guy appreciates his miracle.
lending a gun to someone you know so they can try it, absolutely.
“renting” to a stranger, hmm... not so sure about that one.
as for trying guns, at our range you can pretty much try anything you want just by asking, people are always ready to help with that, but then again, everyone is pretty much known.
thats not such a bad system.
