lending a gun to someone you know so they can try it, absolutely.
“renting” to a stranger, hmm... not so sure about that one.
as for trying guns, at our range you can pretty much try anything you want just by asking, people are always ready to help with that, but then again, everyone is pretty much known.

Not to rain on your phrase quoted above, but what about all the Americans who have decided to arm themselves since the Greatest Arms Salesman Of All Time (Obama) occupied the White Hut?
Those of us in the conservative side should be supporting any and all methods to help our fellow citizens learn how to “kep & bear arms”. But, before one can bear arms, one must acquire arms. Therefore, I suggest that rental of firearms is to be supported. The miniscule number of cases of suicide with a rental gun must not be allowed to be used to in any way to impede a citizen wanting to exercise their Second Amendment Rights.
