America's silent majority raises its voice

For those political pundits still scratching their heads over Michele Bachmann's victory in last weekend's Iowa straw poll, here's a piece of advice. You owe it to yourself to get out a little.

Because if you get beyond the Beltway portrayals of the Tea Party -- such as Newsweek's ridiculous cover story on Bachmann -- you'd find the Minnesota congresswoman on the vanguard of a growing angst in middle America all but invisible to many of the cultural elite who cover politics.

It is the angst of a Nixonian silent majority who now fail to recognize the nation in which they were raised.

Millions of Americans who have seen their social norms vanquished on the alter of an absurd political correctness. Their social conservatism is branded as bigoted, fringe and, of course, hateful, but they no longer care, they've had enough.

That's what Bachmann represents -- a leader who will make, if nothing else, a last stand for traditionalism. Someone willing to unapologetically declare that, all things being equal, children need both a mom and a dad.

That the military is not a social program, that human life always gets the benefit of the doubt, and that though we may not be a Christian nation, we are still a nation of Christians whose public displays of faith need not be attacked by First Amendment revisionism.

Agree with her or not, Bachmann is riding a potentially potent backlash that has emerged from those Americans who see an activist minority imposing its version of morality on the nation.

And, make no mistake, the critics who reserve a special contempt for the Republican presidential candidate are also demanding a departure from consensus -- especially in the arena of gay rights.

For instance, when Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996,

A dose of reality, well-stated by Jason Lewis.

AS I have pointed out the last several weeks, the Great Silent Majority spoke loud and clear in November 1972. The Tea Party is the GSM revived, and they spoke loud and clear in November 2010. Anyone who feels silenced just isn't trying.

Americans are tolerant people. The majority has been compromising with a small group of radicals for more than half a century.

They have just kept pushing, and now it’s just too much, we are sick of it. Time to push back. Take a page from their book. Push back, gain some ground, then push back again.

The new media is a help. It would be great if some of the wealthier conservatives would take over Hollywood, TV programming, and kick the liberal professors out of the schools however it has to be done.

You’re right....I believe it was through the clintoon years we felt silenced...the tea parties have changed all that...I remember in particular...flying back from DC in the jump seat on SW Airline...a Republican couple was sitting in front of me...and in whispers we were talking...this couple was a very well connected in the Republican party...and told me how dangerous for Republicans it had gotten...they were dead serious...I don’t know today if it is like that in DC now and it wasn’t when W was President...but it was in the clinton years.

"...who now fail to recognize the nation in which they were raised."

Everything beautiful and sacred about life, liberty and the freedom to enjoy the fruits of one's own labors and ingenuity is being torn apart by liberals and their twisted ideology.

The mutual admiration society of Washington and the media can’t see beyond their noses.

This is exactly right. The pundits really don’t have a clue that the ground is shifting right out from under them.

Jason Lewis is my 2nd favorite talk show host besides Rush. I used to get him on WTAG from 9pm till midnight and they replaced his show with Andy Dean who I don’t like at all. I turned him off once he started ranking on Mark Levin. Not cool!

The Tea Party people I have been around, look, talk and act a whole lot like the fans at a college football game. The liberals present a caricature of all that and call it a true picture. Many of these same people voted for Obama was, during the campaign, was playing someone who looked, acted and talked like a blend of Will Smith and Robert Redford as “The Candidate.”
