No sport in America is more patriotic than Major League Baseball, so it was odd that the powers that be got in the way of a tribute to our fallen military heroes.

The Washington Nationals, who play their home games just down the street from the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol, wanted to wear special hats with military insignias during their game with the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. This was the Nats' first home game since 30 soldiers riding in a helicopter were killed in Afghanistan on August 6th. But Commissioner Bud Selig's top executives stopped it from happening.

The San Diego Padres always wear camaflouge uniforms at Sunday home games. Its called “salute the military day.”
They also have a company of Marine Corps recruits from MCRD in attendance at the Sunday games. I hope the Padres don’t get in trouble for this.

Love the game. Despise the MLB.

So far they've been unable to ruin it for me like the NFL has football, but it looks like they're working on it.

My interest in MLB ceased to exist after the 1994 World Series was cancelled.

I have to suspect that MLB can’t think of a way to make money off of military insignia. That explains just about everything they do these days....

"They also have a company of Marine Corps recruits from MCRD in attendance at the Sunday games."

Twenty six years ago, when I was at the tender age of 23, I attended a Padres game on a fine Sunday afternoon along with my fellow Marine recruits of Platoon 3075 (as well as the other Platoons in our Series). It was a rare treat for us in Boot Camp that I will always remember.

IIRC, last season the Nationals wore uniforms, ( obviosuly made overseas) where the name WASHINGTON was misspelled...and no one noticed..

Also, after 9/11, the Mets and Yankess wore NYPD and FDNY caps for several games...

After 9/11 the Mets, many of whom volunteered when Shea became a logistic center for the recovery teams, began wearing ballcaps with NYPD,FDNY,PAPD,and OEM (office of emergency Mgmt). After two series MLB told them to stop.I’m told it had to do with the Yankee front office feeling diminished by the Mets response. Mgr Bobby Valentine said no, but it was a Cuban defector, SS Ray Ordonez, who told MLB they’d have to suspend him before he took off his NYPD cap.MLB backed down. The NAts’ player should do the same.

The only thing I could think of for this decision from the powers that be is that it could make the opposing team appear to be unpatriotic...

But since it’s highly likely that this is not the case, someone should slap them off their unpatriotic high horses and the team do it anyway...

Disgusting. First of all I PERSONALLY believe the most patriotic sport is NASCAR, but back to this. It is disturbing that they were shot down on this. Bud Silig (don’t give a crap about his spelling) is revolting. I am soooooooo glad that I stopped watching baseball when the spoiled brats went on strike a bit back. I now exclusively watch football (college and pro) and some NASCAR (rarely sadly). Anyway I am glad that the players at least wanted to do this.

Love The Padres for that.

What's next? Ban the pink and blue bats and wristbands on Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day?

Wear them anyway and accept whatever “punishment” MLB tries to impose.

If the ballplayers believe that strongly in the premise of honoring our servicemembers, they should do it anyway and tell MLB to stick it.

It’s easier to beg forgiveness than ask for permission.

The vast majority of baseball fans will support the Nats in their “protest” to MLB.

As a Phillies Phan, I wholeheartedly endorse the Nats organization and their players in their efforts.

Salute!

Bud Selig and his Dollar Store toupee need to be put out to pasture.

They have every player wear #42 as their uniform number (which looks ridiculous and defeats the purpose of wearing a number) on Jackie Robinson Day, yet they can’t wear these hats?

Way to go MLB!

Are you TRYING to relegate yourselves to 3rd or 4th place in major sports?

Looks like apple pie is the only thing left, cause Baseball and Chevrolet (GM) have a self-imposed death sentence... geez!
