DES MOINES, Iowa Things look different in the Midwest. Back in Washington, people are talking about President Barack Obama's poor showing this past week. (Did you see that Maureen Dowd has turned against him?)
In Iowa, they're focused on the state Republicans' presidential straw poll in Ames next Saturday.
And in Wisconsin, they just got through counting the votes in a recall election that has great national significance.
In Iowa, most of the focus has been on Rep. Michele Bachmann.
She's only in her third term in the House, and she hasn't sponsored any major legislation; she has no executive experience in government.
Her Iowa headquarters, in a suburban shopping mall near a Panera Bread cafe, only opened two months ago.
But the buzz is that she has a serious chance to come in first in the straw poll and far ahead of her Minnesota neighbor, former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who several months ago seemed to be destined to carry Iowa.
What's working for Bachmann was on display when I saw her address 100 employees in an advertising firm in West Des Moines on Wednesday.
She's short and thin one might almost say petite but she takes command immediately, her voice booming over the microphone, speaking without hesitation or a single uh or ah.
"I've lived a real life," she says. "I'm not a politician." She weaves deftly into her talk the fact that she's a tax lawyer, that she and her husband started a small business and raised five children and gave a home to 23 foster children.

First of all, I think it's great that she has not proposed any legislation other than trying to repeal Obamacare. Why the hell does anyone want more laws passed? If the author likes that crap, vote for a democrat.
As for "executive experience," other than being a governor, the author needs to define that in terms of a politician.
Since Romney has executive experience, I guess we should vote for him. Right?
Why? Because she didn't author more F'ing bills controlling our lives?
Do you support this approach?
.
She`s the real deal??? Where`s the flippin money then??
She only managed to raise a little over 2 million bucks since officially announcing.
Much of her support was from the LSM, and even that is dwindling now. I think the LSM has dumped her for Perry at this point.
The one the LSM really fears is Gov Palin! When she announces, she will raise millions!
If Bachmann is the real deal? Where is the freakin money?
Her hiring Ed Rollins means nothing to you? She trashed Gov Palin via Rollins, never personally apologized. First remarks from Bachmann campaign regarding Rollins comments, was that it was no big deal.
Only after her mailbox was overflowing with negative comments did she feign outrage over Rollins comments.
Never personally or publicly apologized to Gov Palin.
My personal opinion is this....She hired Rollins to run her campaign and he told her this right off the bat...Running or not Gov Palin is the only person standing in your way, we have to try and take her out. Bachmann agreed.
That`s how I believe it went down
I would support Palin if she was actually running. She’s not. If you know of someone out there who is running, who is a better candidate than Bachmann, please do tell. I initially liked Cain, but his apology to muslims, and weird handling of that whole ordeal, coupled with his performance in the debates leaves me wondering. My only other candidate is Paul, who continues to impress me in the debates.
Gov Sarah Palin is running, I can assure you of that! Look for her announcement on Sept 3rd or thereabouts
