I think I’m the only one on FR not upset. I never thought it would or could end another way...we simply don’t have the numbers. 2012 is our chance to make a difference and we should be going after Democrats then; we need a Senate majority and a new president - that must be our focus.

Overall, you're right. We don't have the numbers for a full victory. Cutting the debt, versus cuts in the rate of spending increases, just aren't on the table.

So, as a tactical victory, this may pave the way for a strategic victory in 2012, when we can actually turn the tide. As it is, we just don't have the firepower to close the deal. It may be suicidally stupid, but the average American voter doens't understand the issue well enough to realize how screwed we are unless we start hacking down the debt. Grandma wants her check. The nice man promised her money during one of his fireside chats, and she intends to collect.

That mentality is too pervasive in America, and getting it under control is going to be incremental. So, if this is a step in the right direction, then let's be happy for it, and keep Obama's minions on the retreat.

You’re both correct IMO but this forum is inundated by a gang of “my way or the highway” folks who seemingly have lost the ability of cognitive thinking.

AS outlined the plan STOPS growth of government and SHRINKS it by 100 billion per year immediately with mechanisms in place for a further 14 billion per year in cuts by years end. We will have to see the details of what cuts will be made by the trigger if the comm. cannot reach agreement.

One very important and overlooked aspect of this whole thing is that the public has now become glaringly familiar with the huge spending problem in Washington. And since more and more spending is the only way the liberals can get elected it presents for them a serious issue which they will have a difficult time explaining away as they continue to attempt to buy votes.

I’m not upset either.

The media is our enemy, so the PR battle is always uphill.

The perfect is the enemy of the good.

We have successfully shifted the debate from a growing government with more taxes to the need to cut spending.

We win this round. It will help us have a better chance at winning the Senate and WH in 2012.

Then we can have REAL cuts. REAL tax code revision. Real regulatory reform.

As bad as it has been since January 2009, at least people are getting an education.

It could have easily ended another way. They could have not raised the debt ceiling.

I agree with you. The situation was precarious and the mass media was in full force blaming the Republicans. If this had played out much longer we were clearly going to lose the support of independents. I was afraid it was going to be 1996 all over again with the GOP overplaying their hand and helping a democrat President win reelection.

By making this deal, the GOP can redirect the attention to jobs and this ailing economy, Obama’s primary areas of weakness with voters.

Agreed. When 60% of America pays no attention to politics, 98% of the media carries the water of the liberals, and the demonRATS control the senate and white hut we got all we could.

President Palin will kick their ass.

You are not alone. It may seem that way on this forum which is dominated by kamikaze hot heads who would rather be ‘right’ than affective in politics.

Same here....it was always going to get done. There was NEVER a question of that. Republicans just had to make the deal to not raise taxes etc. Which appears they did.

Agree. This is not surrender. In fact is it a huge PR win for the GOP, one we sorely needed.

The deal isn't great, but considering we only control one house; our goal should be singular - 2012 - get the White House, the Senate and keep the House.

Over the past 2 weeks, The One with the enabling press have had the upper hand, IMHO. We were painted as the obstructionists (even though only we had the courage to put forth plan after plan to silence from the Dems.)

Only in the last day or two has the tide turned where the GOP held together and got most of what they want FOR NOW. No new taxes; another shot at $1.2T in cuts later this year; avert being labeled the “party of No” (Nancy might get that name if she blocks the deal). Possibility of voting on BBA.

We need public opinion on our side for 2012. We need the White House to control the Supreme Court. We need the White House to stop the bleeding and reverse Obamacare. We need to address entitlements - the core of our welfare society.

No other scenario on the debt crisis would have delivered this. Maybe we could have shut down the government for a couple of weeks, but we could have never scored a PR success like this deal. Even the libs on the radio are comparing Obama’s speech last night to Carter. Doesn't get much better.

Sure, would have preferred something stronger, but with this President, Harry Reid and an adoring press, it was just not meant to be. Good job Boehner and McConnell.

I agree with you. This was probably as good a deal as we could get. We did not budge on taxes! Republicans only control half of one branch of government. The main advantage we had is that budget and tax bills must originate in the house (the only thing we control).

I'm going to call my new congressman's office to support his position on this plan. I remember the 1995 government shutdown, and it didn't do anything to help Republicans beat Clinton in 1996, so we got 4 more years of Clinton.

I’ll agree but one had hope. The fact it is mostly all the idiots who we knew were bad at least 5 years ago. Couldn’t beat McCain. Couldn’t get Christine O’Donnell and Sharron Angle and that Guy in Washington State elected. Didn’t win Senate and the Pubs in the senate other than a very few are nuts.

You are not the only one

We could only do so much. The Speaker is not my first choice...I find him too malleable.

But we only have the House and we face a Senate with the most liberal Senators in US history in charge...Schumer/Durbin and the usual soft Republicans.

And an oddball radical President.

and a Media that 90% think the Democrats are not liberal enough.

Look how things go even when we did control things more...it’s still moderate.

Nothing big can get done without a conservative President, conservative Senate with 60 votes the SML can round up and a strong House..which we have.

So it has always been about 2012 and how much to give Obama to run on...and he didn’t get a lot.

I tell ya..getting a Senate we can work with is the problem in 2012.

I think Obama is very beatable and I think any candidate but Romney would be a vast improvement though I am not crazy on Perry...yet anyhow.

It’s just the reality.

Shutting down the govt and hurling insults for weeks until checks actually do stop flowing and you can bet Geithner would cut military and seniors first would not help us.

We still just don’t have the numbers up there..our general population power right now is stronger than our representation but we can correct that is 16 months..not long.

and the Dems are stifled for now till then....

We will destroy them next November unless we trip over our own feet

..and yes I realize we will get downgraded anyhow...only seriously reducing spending will help that

but all this posturing will make it ver difficult for any Democrat to defend themselves as spending cut folks after all this dragging just for these small cuts...they do not want to reduce the size of government..whether we can afford it is moot to them.

Try running on that next year given how all this has played out...even the stupids out there understand the govt will not manage themselves like they HAVE to and it irks them
