“Reid and senate write it, House gets to rubber stamp, president signs, all done very fast and after hours so no one gets to read it”

Yeah, but that only works if you have a majority, in fact they had a supermajority, in the House.

“...Reid should resign....”

Correction. Reid should be in prison.

Markets are growing increasingly nervous about the possibility of a default. Reid said that he spoke with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Friday morning and that businesses were unable to borrow money for longer than overnight.

Just heard a reporter from CNBC say that he just got a call from a corporate executive who said this is not true and his company borrowed overnight yesterday in the commercial paper markets with no problems. The democrats are on a fear-mongering campaign spreading tales of gloom, doom, and crisis in an attempt to scare the GOP into accepting a bad debt limit increase bill. Don't believe them. There's more than enough cash flowing into the treasury to pay critical items such as interest on US treasury debt, social security payments, military pay, and to pay for essential departments such as the DOD and DOJ.

What is really behind this fear campaign is the the economy. It's close to zero growth right now, partly because the democrats squandered much of the stimulus bill spending on worthless quick pork projects to repay political allies and give the economy a quick boost ahead of the mid-term elections (...that worked out really well for them in those elections, didn't it?....lol.) Anyway, the democRATs are scared now that a partial government shut-down for a few weeks could tip the economy into negative growth in the 3rd quarter. Well, they should have thought about that when they wrote that dreadful stimulus bill. So that's what's happening, folks. Don't buy all their propaganda about doom, gloom, and default on treasury debt. We're never going to default on treasury debt because there's plenty of hard-earned tax money flowing in to pay interest on treasury debt.

The media coverage has been all Boehner, all the time the last 24 hours; that’s where the answer is...so now we get Reid trying to steal back the narrative, and Obama giving another useless speech to interject himself into the headlines again. Pure politics.

They (Democrats) are the party of spend.

So close - just add Republicans to the mix, and you'll have a more accurate picture. Just look at all the votes Bone-head had lined up for his bill. That's a lot of Rs who are also in favor of continued federal & state expansion.

There is a very small band of Tea party patriots who are finally bringing the issue of national solvency to head.

Opposing them are not only Rs & Ds, but the entire establishment media representing both the left and right. By that, I mean such whores as Kristol, Krauthammer, Sowell, et al.

When this sh!tstorm gets underway, these guys should be first in line on the docket.

Still seems like nothing more than a big dog and pony show. If the ultimate end-game is to destroy the economy and re-shape the country as we know it, into a more world friendly nation then they just need to let us default and get the ball rolling on their plans. All of a sudden Reid has a plan?? Come on its just a farce to make the Dems look like the good guys for the zombies of the nation.

I think its part of the plan to make the Tea Party look like the destroyers of the economy by arranging everything, as it is right now, to not have Tea Party fingerprints on any of these bills. Then when they fail and if/when we default they have someone to blame. You don’t think the libs would come down on us even harder than they already do?? They been trying to label us as dissenters and domestic terrorists from day one. The downfall of the economy would play well into that mindset.

I hope its just my tin-foil hat warming up, but doesnt seem to far of a stretch. If not this crisis then something else will come along shortly Im sure.

Harry Reid has no bill. Dems don't want to be on record for anything. They need Boehner's bill for cover. They'll slice it up, pass it and still call it Boehner's bill and still have nothing in writing that can be said to be the Democratic plan.

Pubbie leadership is just plain stupid.

The bills that must originate in the US House of representatives are revenue bills, those dealing primarily with taxation.

Read more: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_bills_must_originate_in_the_House_of_Representatives#ixzz1TViAZCOT

So the Senate can originate a bill deals with the debt ceiling and/or budgets and appropriations.

Now about legislative procedures and the reason Reid is waiting for the House bill. The Senate can amend that bill and then it goes to Conference Committee which reconciles the two bills and then it goes back to each house for a straight up or down vote with no further amendments allowed. That is based on my memory from junior high civics.

The tea party guys are going to get screwed. Our system, through the wisdom of our founders, allows for minority groups in Congress to slow down and gum up the works. The majority in control of either house can pretty much stall things for a long time. However, there are procedures in the system which makes it very difficult for one house of Congress to completely block actions.

When the House is backed into a corner and forced to vote on Reid’s bill...you’ll realize that even the crappy bill Boehner proposed would have been better.

You are absolutely correct, but it is much more than that. Let's suppose the Boehner bill fails and Reid becomes the vehicle. Reid needs 60 votes to secure cloture. He doesn't have anywhere near 60. But, with default looming, the Senate GOP will join Reid and help him pass his bill - amended or not.

Then the Reid bill goes to the House. Boehner cannot possibly pass the House bill with just the GOP conference. So, Obama, Reid and Pelosi cynically conspire to withhold ALL Dem votes in the House for Reid's bill. Boehner is left holding the bag, and the entire media nightmare. Obama, Reid and Pelosi have perfectly set up the "House GOP" for a default and all the economic consequences that follow.

Most Americans won't have a clue that the House deserves the least amount of blame. Instead, the "GOP House" will get ALL the blame from the MSM for its inability to pass the "Reid compromise."

This is called hardball and we must pass Boehner so that this disaster is prevented. The 2012 election is what matters, not this week. Get out of this crisis with GOP principles intact and the Dems still owning the entire economy.

TITLE V—PELL GRANT AND STUDENT LOAN PROGRAM CHANGES

Sec. 501. Federal Pell Grants.

This section provides $17 billion in mandatory funds over two years to help fill the funding gap in the Federal Pell Grant program.

But the legislative statement about the $17 billion for Pell Grants is actually wrong. When you review the amendment to the bill that was done on Thursday, the new spending was increased $17 billion. The total number is $20.1 billion. See Here

SEC. 501. FEDERAL PELL GRANTS.

Section 401(b)(7)(A)(iv) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1070a(b)(7)(A)(iv)) is amended— (1) in subclause (II), by striking ‘‘$3,183,000,000’’ and inserting ‘‘$12,183,000,000’’; and (2) in subclause (III), by striking ‘‘$0’’ and in serting ‘‘$8,000,000,000’’.

Please see post 69. You are incorrect. Reid and Obama are terrified of the Boehner bill - all the reason we need to pass it.

Reid would simply rewrite Boner’s bill to his liking and shove it back to the House. The final compromise would be even weaker tea than what Boner served and Boner will vote for it because ‘time is so short’.

I just looked at the new Boehner plan, and it now has a House bill number - so I guess they rewrote the whole thing to be able to include the Pell Grant funding. The previous plan did not include any new spending, and that is why they were able to amend a Senate bill as the vehicle.

The GOP does not know how to “play the game” the way the Dems can, which is why, time and time again, they take the blame for the very things the Dems are responsible for.

We are on the same page - but I am continually attacked by posters and flamed for supposedly caving in.

I suppose their pov is that by refusing to vote for anything with a debt increase that a debt increase can actually be avoided. No dice. We need more TEA for that.

End result will be less TEA.

No. Reid cannot re-write Boehner’s bill without concessions from the GOP senators to get 60 votes. The concessions come from the Boehner bill. Reid and Obama will give up ANYTHING to remove the 2nd debt vote in 2012; they may be forced to accept LARGER spending cuts in FY 12.

Then, because Boehner has passed a bill, both Obama and Reid are FORCED to get Democratic votes from Pelosi to get the final bill passed to avert a crisis. This gets 90% of the GOP conference off the hook if they don’t want to vote for the Reid-Boehner bill on final passage.

This is legislative strategy 101. Without the Boehner bill, Pelosi can withhold ALL House Dem votes and set up the House GOP for disaster.

This is called being on offense with a prevent defense also concurrently in place. We can secure enormous policy success but more importantly prevent political disaster.

We all share the same goal; some of the hardliners don’t understand legislative procedure.

I understand that this is totally inside baseball, but we must have the Boehner bill passed to increase our leverage and prevent disaster (post 69). We also get the Senate RATS on record that they’ve killed (twice) a balanced package of 1:1 spending cuts and a constitutional amendment.

The three-ring circus continues.

The Reid bill is dead in the house. The Boehner bill is dead in the Senate. There’s no way anything will be passed by next Tues even if all parties worked 24 hrs a day till then.

Meanwhile, as per usual, nobama is MIA.

You may wonder what my personal reaction to this is. Me? I’m buying popcorn futures.

Those concessions will be from McConnells plan to give President Fool Sucka debt ceiling authority. That is the prize, that is what they want. He’ll take that, Boner’s boutique cuts for the bread, and add some Reid’s Special Sauce to serve us all one big All-American crap sandwich, courtesy of Boner and McConnell.

He’ll use McConnell against himself and use that and the time limit to hammer Boner’s ass in line. He’ll get the Dem votes and the McConnell/Boner votes and pass it, and he can say it was a compromise. And it is because it takes right out of both their plans and there’s NOTHING that they can say without looking like fools.

Best part is though, he don’t need the Tea Party. We walk clean and the primaries are good hunting ground for conservatives.
