Boehner Says Economic Hostage-Takers Have Infiltrated the House GOP Caucus

House Speaker John Boehner has a new excuse for the dissent within the ranks of the House Republican Caucus he is supposed to lead.

The caucus, Boehner says, has been infiltrated by a cabal that hopes to take the US economy hostage in order to force political concessions from President Obama and Congressional Democrats.

Appearing Wednesday on conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham’s,, Boehner acknowledged what every serious economic analyst has already said: that a failure to raise the debt ceiling before the August 2 deadline would be devastating to an already struggling US economy.

So “why,” Ingraham asked, were House Republicans resisting the deal that President Obama has offered—a deal that is ridiculously deferent to Republican demands for cuts to needed domestic programs and for tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy.

“Well,” Boehner said of the most belligerent members of his caucus, “first they want more. And my goodness, I want more too. And secondly, a lot of them believe that if we get passed August the second and we have enough chaos, we could force the Senate and the White House to accept a balanced budget amendment.”

Let’s be clear about what Boehner is saying: he has members of his caucus—perhaps sufficient in number to block resolution of the debt ceiling fight—who would be willing to force the United States to default on its debts. Why? Because they want to create so much economic chaos that the president and Congressional Democrats will sign on for a bad policy that could not otherwise advance.

That’s blackmail. But Boehner’s not concerned about the fact that his lawless colleagues would threaten the good faith and credit of the United States—not to mention the economic stability of their homeland—in order to score political points.

The Speaker’s only concern is that a wrong move might make it harder for him to maneuver politically.

“I don’t think that that strategy works,” Boehner explained to the radio host. “Because I think the closer we get to August the second, frankly, the less leverage we have vis à vis our colleagues in the Senate and the White House.”

That is sort of reassuring.

Boehner is not a responsible player. But at least he is enough of a hack to fear that his colleagues who have lost touch with economic reality might—if allowed to have their way—create chaos not just for the economy but force a crisis that Ingraham suggested could “be disastrous for the Republican Party.” John Nichols

I have a hard time believe Laura Ingram said anything like that... can anyone here confirm?

And what deal is this supposed to be? Has obambi ever proposed a budget?

The libtards are losing their minds that Aug2 will come and the world will NOT end and obambi will not get his $trillion dollar campaign slush fund.

If Boner caves he should be given a vote of no confidence and removed immediately. How do you get rid of a speaker?

If he caves he is funding his own demise.

The Senate did not vote on the CCB. They voted rather or not to bring it to the floor for a vote so they wouldn’t have to go on record as yea or nay.

Might keep your finger off that hair trigger “fool” label. You’re likely to shoot yourself.

If the base doesn't apply pressure to those in DC who believe its SOP to play footsie with the democrats then all we should expect is more of the same.

I want Obama care defunded. I want Obama's massive increase in the bureaucracy rolled back.

I want to see our side as ruthlessly motivated as the leftwing socialists.

For a friggen change.

Boehner shouldn’t even be giving the REID senate a second bill, eespecially one that is an opening to ADD crap that THE DEMS IN THE HOUSE WILL VOTE FOR.

BTW, you do realize that the Senate can still vote AGAIN on CCB at any time, and amend it any which way they want, sending it back to the house like you say.

But with Boehner taking the honest initiative you described, (pass CCB and then take it to the Senate as prescribed by the Constitution) Reid and Obama now have the political advantage, which they will gladly use to destroy the country by manipulating the stupid-party to fight amongst itself.

Now that you're caught up today with the Catch-22 problem Boehner has been dealing with for a week, let's try your point again?

Um, that’s “voting on it,” FRiend.

That’s like saying “It’s not that they didn’t come in out of the rain, they just decided to stay in the rain and also not come through the door.”

The Senate did vote on CCB you fool. Boehner took it up there as soon as it passed the house. It failed 51-46.

That was a week ago. Miss much?

The CCB has not been voted on! The vote taken in the Senate was to table the CCB. It was not allowed an up or down vote. So, it is still up in the Senate and can be voted on.

That was a week ago. Miss much?

It was tabled by the dems withut debate.

The House does not have to re-send the CCB in order for the Senate to reconsider it after it has been tabled. If the pubbies could get enough votes, they can force Reid to bring it back to the floor from the table.

Learn anything much?

Kids.

Process = “Step 1 + Step 2 + then + Step 3”

If you reject Step 1, you reject the entire process.

If they couldn’t get past the first step, how much different do you think the rest of the steps are going to go?

I listened to the interview. Boner said it much nicer way, but that’s the gist of what he said.

Boner has no position. Zero. He thinks he’s going to send a weak bill to the Senate so he can force another confrontation next spring and box Obama. Reid will take his bill, rape it, send it back and smear us because we reject it.

We’ve passed the bill the Senate needs to work on. Boner is trying to do political calculations with a bill that has no real teeth.

Egads, Boehner! You are an idiot! Not "political concessions" but "responsible spending cuts".

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid brought the measure up in order to kill it through a motion to table.

The bill was not voted on.

The Boehneristas are flat out lying about “cutting”. What they’re not telling you is that they’ve not cut one dime out of this year’s spending. They only want to REDUCE the projected increases in the out years. If they really wanted to cut the budget as you and I understand the word cut, they’d freeze spending at current levels til the budget is more in balance.

Ask your congressman for some illustrations of programs that will have less funding in 2012 than they currently have.
