House GOP yanks debt-limit bill

House Republicans delayed by at least a day a floor vote on their package to raise the debt ceiling, the latest challenge facing Speaker John Boehner and GOP leaders as they try to avoid a default on the nation’s debt. The decision to move the vote to Thursday or beyond came after the Congressional Budget Office reported late Tuesday night that the package Boehner crafted would only reduce deficits by $850 billion, $150 billion short of the speaker’s goal of $ 1 trillion in budget and spending cuts.

I like the Rand Paul plan. I think his plan may actually under estimate the amount the debt it cuts since it doesn't take any growth (dynamic weighing) that may occur in the debt reduction.

I like the sound of it too. Across the boards cuts make sense.

Sorry...but that sounds like a gimmick to me...and it sounds like they are banking on something that hasn't happened and they can't COUNT on happening.

It's typical Washington BS...and frankly...if anyone is spinning something...its Boehner...Reid and Obama....and ANYONE who suggests anything other than moving the baseline of the budget back to 2008 in the least.

Just think about it. The dems decry it as destroying America that the GOP only wants to increase the national debt to $25 TRILLION (according to this ROTTEN plan) by 2021.

OMG that is CRAZY. Funny how they won't talk in THOSE terms...and how reporters won't ask the questions along those lines. We are being played at a supreme level.

Why don’t you tell the truth. It depends on which baseline you use. Jan or March.

Why can’t you just get it that even Boehner admits there is a problem and has gone back to rewrite it.

The CBO did not score the second part of Bonehead’s Deal.

What does that tell u? It tells me u can’t score phantom cuts.
Cuts that sound good, but will never be made.

It is good that an independent review cleaned up Boehner’s numbers. That’s why you put them on paper. So they can be reviewed.

Now he’ll cut more. Maybe from FY2012.

What does it matter Rummychick if it’s 850 billion or 2 zillion in cuts over 10 years. The cuts will NEVER be made. The only cuts that matter are the here and now. The CBO did not score the 2nd part of Boneheads bill because it’s phantom cuts, yet to be determined and enacted.

Tell me where I said I supported it. I back either CC&B or Rand Paul’s plan.

“Yeppers, It’s insane to see grow people argue about a trillion here or a trillion there. It’s all phantom numbers. The only cuts that matter is the here and now.”

EXACTLY. Does anyone really think these ‘caps’ will mean jack to whoever is running Congress 5 years from now?

Actual deficit reduction would be in the five to ten dollar range, if anything.

What a crock, 10 trillion plus in new spending and growing government, over ten years, and boner is going to take a chain saw to it and save A trillion, beam me up Scottie.

Why are they pulling the bill then if not true? I guess Bonehead and Cantor need more time to drum up the votes.

Correct, too many TEA party freshmen told boner to shove it.

The new boner bill really cuts only $ 26 Billion in 2012 so how can it ever get to $ 1.1 Trillion in the following 9 years?

It's the same old bullshit, fake savings in the future, spend the money now.

I hope the House passes nothing.

My 101 K {user to be 401 but it shrunk} retirement money will take another big hit, but the world won't end.

The old established congress critters don't believe us, but we do love the smell of napalm in the morning.

I like the idea of across the board percentage cuts. Every department has to cut x%. Find it hard to believe that 1% would be enough.

They’re also spinning this one:

“as they try to avoid a default on the nation’s debt.”

There won’t be a default as long as the debt’s interest payments are made on time. Money is still coming in and the debt interest payments are included as one of the essential funded expenditures.

There’s no way the bankers would permit their people to not pay the interest.

I think the CBO had nothing to do with it: it was the heavy opposition of many of the Tea Party conservatives that led Boehner to think he might not carry the vote.

This is real simple; keep sending up plans that cut increasingly MORE each time the @$$wipe Dems in the Senate and Obama reject it. Pretty soon they'll get the message, knowing they will have to sign something and they better do it sooner rather than later. My own hunch is that if Boehner doesn't cave, Harry Reid will call up CCB for a re-vote (which he can do).

Levin said on his radio show yesterday that a lot of the old GOP estabishment were making calls to the current GOP Freshmen to vote for this bill... and that was before the CBO numbers came out.

And I could not help thinking to myself that these old GOP hacks and RATS of the past are the reason we are now in the shape we are in.
