The unemployment rate increased to 9.2% in June, the Labor Department reported, but if the recession hadnt pushed so many people out of the labor market it would have been much worse.
The duration of unemployment continues to increase and sat at an average of 39.9 weeks in June. More than four million people who want jobs, or nearly a third of the unemployed, have been out of work for more than a year. Those are the people are hanging in and looking for work, but a large number have given up altogether.
The share of the population in the jobs market, called the labor-force participation rate, fell to 64.1% last month the lowest level since 1984 when women were still just beginning to enter in full force. The participation rate peaked in 2000 and has been steadily declining since as the effect of women taking full-time jobs plateaued and Baby Boomers began to retire, but the decline accelerated sharply during the recession. The participation rate was 66% at the start of the recession and 65.7% when the recovery started in June 2009. If the participation rate were still at that level, the unemployment rate would be more than 11% right now.

The REAL unemployment rate in Michigan is over 17%. God only knows what the underemployment rate is. Also, my hubby is a Realtor and his business has dropped off a whopping 40% for the past 2+ years. Yet gas, groceries, ect have increased. Nice, real nice, thanks O’bama.
Watch the boom. We would have a job for every American (and one less pretender president).
“The REAL unemployment rate in Michigan is over 17%”
We have swapped our manufacturing growth seed corn for a cheap bowl of expendable consumer goods.
The thousands of aerospace workers being laid off this year, won’t be counted as unemployed, because they are either receiving some kind of severance package, taking early retirement, or both.
Not looking for sympathy, but the simple fact is, if the work was there, they’d continue their careers.
They are among the uncounted unemployed.
But the stock market is going up, up, up. It’s amazing.
Yep we sure have. Get rid of most of government regulations, get rid of all the complicated tax codes and crop. welfare. Make the tax code so simple even a 5th grader could do it. Lower tax rates, drill baby drill, and watch our economy explode.
Plus, by spending all that money they get paid for not looking for work, the drop-outs stimulate the economy, which creates jobs. So it's win-win.
I challenge any liberal to find the flaw in this reasoning. It would be very amusing to hear them try.
so if you are currently unemployed, get out there and start looking again in order to pump-up these numbers and help sink Obama.
“We have swapped our manufacturing growth seed corn for a cheap bowl of expendable consumer goods.”
The consumer goods aren’t the problem; it’s simply stupid to run any sort of meaningful manufacturing in the USA. If you can start up or move, it’s smart to move.
DOW just announced it is leaving Texas/LA for foreign shores and plants will be allowed to wind down and not be renewed -— because employment (read: Obamacare) and red-tape costs are too high in the USA.
I have a brother (a total dem shill, but that is besides the point) who works for IDES here in Illinois. They (those that work there who he talks with at the water cooler, I guess) estimate the numbers in Illinois are well over 15%, and many folks that do find work are working for 50-60% of what they were making 10 years ago.... Yes, 10 years ago... He says he hears that story all the time from people.
Also, they get memos all the time, that they are not allowed to talk about unemployment or underemployment figures or speculation, and they can be terminated for doing so.
Even my dem brother finds this insane, and even he thinks they are jerking the numbers around. Of course, he doesn’t blame Obama, he blames “Bushitlerhaliburtonchaney” and “the rich”... how? he won’t elaborate, but he just KNOWS it.
Logical arguments are not something he can partake in. For example, I mentioned how in WI what they are doing is helping the school districts and the kids, and his face will contort and spittle will form on his lips as he fires off about how the governor there is a fascist and takes his orders from the Koch brothers.
I swear, being a lib is truly a mental disorder.
