Tax the Rich!!!!! (OK, Raise Taxes on all the "Rich" GS and SES "Workers" Until Deficit is Zero.)
NA ^ | 5 July 2011 | R A Cook

So Obama demands that we must progressively "Tax the Rich" as a price for raising the debt limit.

OK. Let's do that.

Any civilian government employee making over $150,000.00 per year gets a 15% tax increase until the deficit is zero'ed.

Any civilian making over $100,000.00 per year gets a 10% tax increase.

Any civilian making over $75,000.00 per year gets a 5% tax increase.

So how much would this raise? Does it really matter, Obama (and Hillary) have already said in 2008 that the fact that raising capital gains tax rates doesn't increase revenue "doesn't matter, it is a matter of 'fairness' not revenue increase."

Yes, wee could cut their pay; but that would only "change" their contracts as each becomes due, and the unions would complain about that. 8<)

Significantly, I can't find any govt document since 1992 from regular Google searches that accurately lists the number of high-paid government "workers" in each department: particularly limited is the number of SES (all 150,000.00 plus salaries BEFORE bonuses!) and GS-13, GS-14, and GS 15 (up to $155,000.00 per year before bonuses.)

don’t forget to include those golden benefits in their pay package (Cadillac health plans, lifetime pensions, both which ask of little contributions from the employee compared to us regular working schmo’s)...

How about an immediate 20% wealth tax on all politicians & their immediate families until the budget is balanced?

If you guys really believe top level govt civil service workers are fat cats- why didn’t you enter the civil service?

Why stand on the sidelines and cast stones at people who chose a profession you could have chosen?

From where I sit the peopel who work in local city county and state government are better paid and have MUCH better benefits than federals.

I don’t get the envy.

Oh wait, it is ENVY

You know you could fire every fed or take 100% of their pay and it wouldn’t begin to touch the $14 Trillion deficit.

Because they're bloated fat cats whose livelihood revolves about making and enforcing rules to trip up and suppress actual wealth producers?

That's why I didn't follow in my elder brother's footsteps, anyhow.

probably because when i was in college and getting ready to join the workforce the person who occupied the WH was a man named Ronald Reagan- if you forgot he envisioned personal responsibility, limited gov’t....when Reagan made cuts to the student loan program i remember my dad saying, “he’s right- its’ not his job to pay for your college”....

anyway- this Reagan guy had a crazy idea that people should go out and make it on their own versus parasiting off taxpayers and crying poverty- the situation we are faced with today...

Time to change the language in these debates. No more “Tax the Rich.” Time to switch the narrative to “Tax the Employers.” That’s what it really is all about.

Ah yes, you should sell this to Obama.

It would help him to define the "Rich" much lower and allow him to be far more honest.

Of course that would put a lot of small businesses out of business, but what they heck - we don't need any new jobs as his "stimulus" brought in enough.

Your article seems to encourage Obama to redefine the "Rich" lower to get more revenues, Whoopee. Let's put more folks on the streets.

/Sarcasm OFF Beware- THE TAX MAN COMETH!

LOL, I am a GS, and no one who works with me makes near those numbers. That kind of pay goes to high level people in regional and national offices, not your average working stiff out on the front lines dealing with the public every day. This is like picking on the cashier because the store manager makes a great deal of money. When you paint with too broad a brush it discredits your arguments.

Can we please dispense with the canard of lifetime pensions? The feds went to a 401K type (defined contribution) plan at least 15 years ago. Yes, there are current employees who were hired under the old system, but new employees are under the defined contribution plan.

You can also expect to see a trend toward "term" contracts, such as the FDIC has done the past two years. They staffed up to handle the ongoing crisis with two-year contracts, with a potential two-year extension at the option of the employer.

You'll get no argument from me on other benefits: they're awesome compared to the private companies I worked for.

“From where I sit the peopel who work in local city county and state government are better paid and have MUCH better benefits than federals.”

I have noticed a trend among federal government workers in FR to down play their benefits. Federal benefits especially retirement compensation (both pension, 401K, and health care) equal or exceed the most generous state and local government plans. Federal government salaries have increased substantially in the last ten years with an especially large increase in six figure salaries in the last 5 years. Federal job security is legendary even in this recession. Federal workers have not received any furloughs or pay reductions as have some workers in the state and local government. The pay freeze proposed by Obama was phony, not touching the built-in step increases.

Reforming federal pay and benefits is an important step in deficit control. It will not obviously control future deficits by itself but it is an important part of long term deficit control contrary to your assertion. Federal pensions have 5+ trillion of unfunded liabilities with unfunded liabilities growing at $200 billion per year. Major reform of federal pensions is an absolutely essential part of long term deficity control. I would begin by major reductions to the unsustainable CPI-W (minus 1) COLA, eliminating the Social Security early retirement payments, and increasing the retirement age to Social Security age.

"You know you could fire every fed or take 100% of their pay and it wouldn’t begin to touch the $14 Trillion deficit."

1) Isn't firing every fed the same as taking 100% of their pay?
2) How would that not "begin" to touch the $14T deficit?
3) Are you really this stupid?

yeah, and while we’re at it, let’s tax the snot out of the govt contractors as well....after all, they’re just bastard govt workers.
Pay scales are available at http://www.opm.gov/oca/11tables/index.asp
Bonuses are up to the discretion of the individual’s supervisor...cannot exceed 10% of annual pay, though that certainly isn’t typical-many dont get one, and from what I have seen, it is usually in the 1%-2% range, and 33% of that comes out in taxes.
Flat tax rate, that way, everyone has a dog in the fight

I think a 10% income tax surtax to be used for deficit elimination should be enacted. It should cover all income so if you get social security, a pension, any income of any kind you are taxed. Until everybody is paying to eliminate the deficit they wont get serious about it...
