Former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain is a grassroots sensation on the 2012 presidential campaign trail. Now we know what that looks like as a dollar figure: Cain brought in $2.46 million in campaign contributions, a number the campaign tells TPM it expects to see rise to closer to $2.48 when all the final reporting is done.
"It's not Mitt Romney money, it's not [President] Obama money, but we're excited," spokesperson Ellen Carmichael told TPM late Friday night.
Cain, wealthy from his experience running Godfather's as well as other successful business enterprises, has put in some of his own cash as "seed money" for the campaign, Carmichael said. But she said that the amount Cain has contributed pales in comparison to the $2 million or so former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman gave his own campaign, which reported just over $4 million in total fundraising today.
Carmichael said the campaign intends to use their haul to hire new staff and notes that Cain dropped three national mail pieces to help contribute to the total. She said that's a sign that Cain intends to spend his campaign cash to boost is name ID and his already surging poll numbers.
"The campaign boasts $0 in campaign debt," team Cain noted in a press release, "which Cain believes is a testament to his business principles."
Carmichael said most of Cain's money came from small donors giving less than $100, noting that the campaign has "more than 27,000" online donors.
Romney is expected to announce between $15-20 million in total fundraising this quarter. Obama is predicted to announce more than $60 million.
And I bet almost all came from contributors more interested in his message, not the color of his skin. We have had our first black president, we can now concentrate on the message of the candidate. White guilt should be assuaged, now we can vote the policies of the candidate rather than his ethnicity.
Look for the previous posts saying his staff is quitting and he is out of money. Lot’s of trolls. I am starting to see a strategic plan.
For the record, Mr. Cain is VERY high on my list. I don’t mind that he is Oriental.
Out of all the declared candidates, Herman Cain is my favorite and would have my vote right now.......But if Sarh jumps in, I’ll have to switch my vote.
PAlin-BACHmann: PAYBACK
Cain is part Chinese, Japanese, or Korean (etc.)?
Maybe that’s where part of his smarts came from.
Even if he does not make the presidential ticket (and I wish him well in that effort), Cain would be great as, say, a Secretary of Commerce.
I want him in charge.
Herman 2012!
What I just posted is real. Watch Out for the deep dry humor and sarcasm that makes me.
I’m with you. Tell Him!
Woo hoo! Just $998 Million more to go!
Woo hoo! Just $998 Million more to go!
How far out in front of the alternatives will he be? Will anyone be able to catch him or is the stage already set for Obama vs. Romney?
Doesn’t matter much how much money Romney has. Last time around, McCain had huge money struggles Mitt spent millions. He just doesn’t resonate at the voters booth. While this time is slightly different as a ‘frontrunner’, he was also pretty hyped last time going in as an alternative to Rudy, too, and unlike last time there are legitimate conservative alternatives.
