Senator Obama, an Illinois Democrat now seeking the presidency, suggests in his book that his years in New York were a pivotal period: He ran three miles a day, buckled down to work and “stopped getting high,” which he says he had started doing in high school. Yet he declined repeated requests to talk about his New York years, release his Columbia transcript or identify even a single fellow student, co-worker, roommate or friend from those years.
“He doesn’t remember the names of a lot of people in his life,” said Ben LaBolt, a campaign spokesman.
Mr. Obama has, of course, done plenty of remembering. His 1995 memoir, “Dreams From My Father,” weighs in at more than 450 pages. But he also exercised his writer’s prerogative to decide what to include or leave out. Now, as he presents himself to voters, a look at his years in New York — other people’s accounts and his own — suggests not only what he was like back then but how he chooses to be seen now.

Sure doesn't sound like he stopped getting high.
His whole history prior to around 1995 is a big mystery.
The stuff about his neighborhood is bogus. The East 90s were hardly a Puerto Rican slum reeking of urine and gunfire in the early 80s.Spanish Harlem did not come south of 100 St and while the city was continuing its downhill slide begun by Lindsay, the upper East Side was exoeriencing the Yuppie invasion. This was written by someone who knew little of the reality of my city.
I suppose Obama thinks this script he is following is good enough for TV; then it’s good enough for him.
This time is always the one that should have been concentrated on, the Brinks robbery occurred 3 months after he arrived. I will always wonder if he knew those involved or was one of them.

One of the Black Panther Party/Weather Underground’s 1981 Brink’s robbers who is still in jail used the manufactured identity of “Nathanial Tate” but his real name is Sekou Odinga, and yes, he is related to Raile Odinga, Obama’s cousin. The Brink’s robbery was north of New York City and three officers were killed.
When people are on drugs all the time, they can't remember the names of the "people in their life". People not on drugs all the time (or heavy alcoholics) do actually remember the people in their life.

he then graduated from Columbia after only 2 semesters... fall 82, and spring 83.
(no evidence of attendence before that.)
yet his grades were good enough, to enter Harvard after that.
