EDITORIAL: GM’s gas-tax fraud--Ripping off motorists is key to the leftist agenda
The Washington Times ^ | June 9, 2011 | Editorial

Government Motors has become yet another mouthpiece for the Obama administration. General Motors Co. CEO Dan Akerson told the Detroit News Saturday that he wants a $1 per gallon hike in the gas tax. Consumers already facing nearly $4 a gallon prices at the pump aren’t going to be pleased to see that figure jump overnight to $5, but the left and its crony capitalist allies don’t care what the public thinks.

Mr. Akerson wants to use the power of government to make buying a Chevy Volt, GM’s entry into the electric car market, more economically attractive. Such marketplace intervention is apparently needed because a mere 481 Volts were purchased last month, despite government subsidies and incentives worth thousands of dollars. By comparison, Ford sold 42,399 unsubsidized F-series pickup trucks over the same period. That’s almost one big gas-guzzler every minute.

The bureaucratic class at the state and federal level wants you to think the opposite is the case. They perpetuate the myth that gas-tax revenues are dangerously low because everyone is driving a Prius or some kind of electric car. “In the past, the Highway Trust Fund has been largely user-supported through fuel-tax revenue,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s blog explained last year.

Since we all own GM, I think they owe each of us a car. STFU on the gas tax crap.

And this is why “buying American” is not always the best solution, especially when it’s “buy UNION”. J.S.

We know what they are up to....and this should be a litmus test issue...no slack for anyone who votes to raise fuel tax. I happen to know that much of the fuel tax goes to public service announcements on seatbelts, rehabs on old train stations, local roads near the homes of high level DOT staff, and other nonsense. To top it off, here in Kansas, the state highway fund was raided to make up for a revenue shortfall.

...despite government subsidies and incentives worth thousands of dollars.

When the dealership swipes the $7,500 tax credit and sells the car used with 30 miles on it at the full sticker price, are we surprised? Anyone?

The Volt’s engine is made down under, and the batteries come from Korea. American graft, foreign car.

would it make any difference if people knew how much the transportation industry alone paid in use taxes?

We’re getting hosed.

I say we outsource the entire company to China. If you work at GM your supporting the kind of crap the company has been spewing and sucking my tax dollars. People like that bastard belong on the street.

Great point. While technically right now it is not against the law for dealers to take the tax credit if they buy the Volt from a GM dealer, it’s skirting the law.

GM tries to say they have no control of that but it’s a lie. Dealers have GM franchise contracts and GM could stop it in a second if they wanted to.

Toyota Tundra CrewMax Limited-— loaded and it wasn’t cheap, BUT, it was designed and built in Texas, without being touched by filthy union hands.

I’ll never buy an Obama car. I like Ford trucks too, but I don’t like Ford.

I’ve had this Tundra for about 8 months and I love it!

Granted, it only get’s about 17mpg when I’m not towing, but I don’t care.

I refuse to live in Obama’s America.

The Petroleum Marketing Association in Kansas puts stickers on a lot of the pumps, letting people know the tax on every gallon is 43 cents. Its a start.

The good CEO should be aware that voicing such ideas has led to beatings with dimensional lumber. Just sayin...

At first glance I thought that the title said "flipping off motorists." At second glance, it should have.

I’ve lurked on the GM sponsored ‘Volt’ boards. A lot of people were surprised that they didn’t get the full 7,500....because it is a non-refundable credit. Your tax liability hs to be at least 7,500 to fully benefit. Think about that - people (like me) who don’t make enough to have a 7,500 tax liability are buying 40,000 dollar cars. I suspect GM’s lending arm is bending a lot of rules to get these idiots in their Volts.

You’re right on that, it should have been “flipping off motorists” because that’s exactly what CEO Akerson is doing.

I really have to wonder if he and the big shots under him realize the enemies they’re making with potential buyers of GM products?

You’re right. There’s been a couple threads that the tax credit has been discussed but I’ve never seen an article that spelled out in order to receive the full credit you have to owe $7,500 in taxes.

A few Dems were trying to get the tax credit changed to an instant rebate awhile back but I don’t believe that’s going anywhere.

Well the Seattle Times has a article 6/9/2011, the chargers are going in at Quest Stadium and those using the chargers get their power free. How long will that last?
