Billed as the sum total of all the law enforcement community has learned about patrol cars to date, the PPV boasts a 6.0L V-8 engine with 355 horsepower, 18-inch steel wheels, and a host of gadgets that puts any Hollywood squad car to shame.
The Caprice, which replaces the long-used Ford Crown Victoria, is equipped with an infrared night vision camera, automated license plate scanner, and a touch-screen center console that replaces the older computers traditionally used by officers.
In addition to horsepower and firepower, the cruiser is also outfitted with the latest in information technology, with ethernet, Wi-Fi and an experimental wireless-mesh network in the trunk.
Even the bad guys can ride in comfort: cut-outs in the back seat are custom-made to accommodate any handcuffed suspect.
At a taxpayer cost of $20,000, LAPD officials say vehicle wrapping was used on the all-black sedans instead of the traditional paint to minimize repair expenses and protect resale value.
Drivers can expect to see the new 2012 Chevrolet Caprice PPV cruising city streets as early as mid-2011.

That 20 grand is just for the car not the 40 thousand to outfit it
Never mind my comprehension aint to good today
I am sure someone will sue ‘cause the infrared scanners will affect people ‘of color’, the poor and women disproportionately. And I am sure someone on the LAPD oversight commission will agree and ask the 9th Circuit to stop the practice.
Would it be illegal to mount infrared LEDs on my car spelling out obscenities? After all, people couldn't see it unless they had IR equipment.
Funny how Chevrolet is winning over these municipalities and government contracts, its almost like they are being shoveled down their throats from the top....
Does it have an ID scanner to determine if someone is in the country legally?
Total cost with all bells an whistles is around 67k....
My local Sheriff turned down the package.
We can overhaul crown vics for around 15k tops to serve requirements for another 200k miles on the odometer.
Lots easier to restore an stay with easy to replace toughbook laptop etc versus crap that will require loss of the vehicle if parts are broken.
Keep it simple an reliable in this age of goobermint spending.
Oh a **GM** car, huh? Not a Ford?
Now THAT is totally unexpected, you know?
I’m completely sure this figure of $20,000 is for all the electronics and stuff, too, you know? And not quadruple that...
/sarc
Sort of like my vanity license plate....
Looked at in a rear view mirror....
3M-TA3 .......:o)
Patrol and pursuit endurance is somewhat compromised by the massive but ultimately finite spool of CAT 5 cable that it has to tow. :-)
Slave new World.
Part of the reason for this is that Ford stopped making the Crown Vic.
Nice car and gadgets, but cops want to know will it kill the law-abiding citizen’s dog effectively?
Also, will it be able to clear a speed bump or a rolling gate track?
Oh heck yeah. That FLIR will find the sleeping old dog no matter how far under the porch it is. Plus it detects the dogs already killed. That's big ammo bucks saved right there.
“That FLIR will find the sleeping old dog no matter how far under the porch it is.”
They will probably have a ghost hunting episode on one of the Cop shows. Another advantage is that they will be able to check out which shop has the hottest doughnuts.
