PHOENIX – A federal judge ruled Wednesday that the suspect in the Tucson shooting rampage that wounded U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is mentally incompetent to stand trial, putting the criminal case against him on hold indefinitely.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Larry Burns means Jared Lee Loughner, 21, will be sent to a federal facility for up to four months in a bid to restore his competency.

Loughner, dressed in a khaki prison suit and sporting bushy, reddish sideburns, was removed from the hearing after an outburst and had to watch part of the proceeding on a TV screen in another room. Burns had Loughner escorted from the courtroom after Loughner lowered his head and said what sounded like: "Thank you for the freak show. She died in front of me." His head was inches from the table in front of him

... in a bid to restore his competency.
I hope the treatments include a cattle prod, razor blades & salt and at least one corkscrew.

Mentally incompetent?

Puke...

So, this means the “nut” likely will never “pay” for his crimes (at least not in this life). Now sad.

I’m still trying to figure out how our constitution got stretched to shield murderers, rapists, etc. from prosecution and justice based on an IQ score, or perceived “mental frailty”.. A danger to society is a danger to society. And in this case (like many others) - what could he possibly contribute to his defense, “competent” or not? There is no doubt he did it. It isn’t like some great big mystery relying on thin and circumstantial evidence.

AGain - a case of criminals having more rights than law-abiding citizens.

The sheriff, Dupnik, who is also responsible for the murder of a veteran recently,

didn’t think he was “incompetent” enough to deny him the right to buy a firearm.

Dupnik needs to pay.

This punk smoked the most potent dope on the streets all day long. Hang him by his thumbs in the desert.

I’d settle for the ending Jeffrey Dahmer had.

Well his little ploy of talking to himself at the trial worked didn’t it? I wonder if his lawyer coached him on how to act. I don’t care what his mental state is, take the murdering ba***** out and shoot him.

I don’t believe we ever found out what party he was. I find it surprising that he would shout a fellow Democrat if he was on though.

A trial would show the world he is a leftist. Can't have that.

The reason that he wasn’t locked up as a danger to society was because his mother worked for and was friends with Sheriff Dupnik, a real dipsh!t democrat.

There were various reports from friends stating that he had left-leaning rants. Now think about it, why is it that we never found out what Party he was inclined towrards? Could it be for the same reason that when a Democrat member of Congress gets caught at something his Party affiliation is never listed, byt when it happens to a Republican its in the headline, or the first paragraph at least.

Somebody should put a light bulb in his mouth and see if it lights up like Uncle Fester used to do on the Addams Family.

How the hell can he be competent enough to kill and wound people yet not competent enough to sit in a courtroom?

I've never understood either. Like the case of JOHHNY PAUL PENRY who raped and murdered Pamela Moseley Carpenter, the sister of former Redskins kicker Mark Moseley. His death penalty sentence was overturned because he was deemed to have the reasoning ability of a 7-year old. Seems to me a guy who is capable of rape and murder with the mind of a 7-year old should be executed post-haste. Such a person is too dangerous to live among civilized people.
