Married to the mob: the man who married 107 women ... and had 185 kids
Robyn Dixon
May 13, 2011

He fell in love with his first wife because she was sincere and eager to please.

His second wife, a cousin, was irresistible because she did everything he wished and nothing he didn't.

"That alone made me love her."

His third wife won him because she submitted to his every request.

"I saw her, I liked her. I went to her parents and asked for her hand in marriage."

Wife No. 4 was very obedient.

So was wife No. 5.

Wife No. 6, the same.

As were wives 7 and 8 and 9 and ...

Well, by then - it was the late 1980s - things had taken off for Bello Maasaba, an Islamic faith healer from this city in Niger state.

I almost passed out thinking about the child support.

He looks tired - and thin. Probably only gets minimum wage at that chef job.

Maybe his “wives” are all on public assistance and failed to list him as the father?

“She did everything he wished, she submitted to his every request, very obedient ...”

I’m sensing a pattern.

This reminds me of the Mormon demographic study of the 1800s where every wife added decreased the average number of kids per woman by 1.
The average is 1.8 kids per woman. He may have been “fruitful”, but by African standards, the women were not.
But I agree - how did they support themselves? Then again, in Africa, it is commented that the women do all the work while men do none.

I noticed those numbers, too ... fewer than 2 children per wife, on average. Some of them may have preferred it that way, given the risks of childbirth and the difficulty of rearing children in a sub-Saharan pesthole.

I disagree, my Great Grandfather had two wives and Twenty kids, his cousin had two wives and 24 kids, my other Great Grandfather, who didn't believe in multiple wives had 14 kids, it seems that having multiple wives took a load off the ladies.
