'Welcome to Wisconsin, Jim Crow' (WI House passes Voter ID bill)
Isthmus - The Daily ^ | May 12, 2011 | Emily Mills

Posted on 05/12/2011 10:57:47 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

"......It was one of the most difficult things I've watched in a long while: Last night, the Assembly debated AB7, the Voter ID bill, for almost six hours before a final vote saw the measure pass, 60-35.

Protestors watching the proceedings from the gallery erupted into angry shouts at the passage, and as one gentleman was escorted from the room, he summed up the feelings of many well – "Welcome to Wisconsin, Jim Crow!"

This bill is, at its core, a rollback of the right to vote that impacts the most vulnerable and already disenfranchised populations in the state. It spits in the face of those who've come before and fought (and sometimes died) to see this most fundamental right guaranteed to all citizens – not just those with a specific skin color, gender, or pocketbook size.

Democrats introduced 50 amendments to the bill in an attempt to temper its effects—one that would have allowed any ID, not just state issued ones, to be used at the polls, for instance—but one after another they were all tabled by largely partisan votes.

Unsurprisingly, Rep. Tamara Grigsby's final statement regarding the bill was right-on. "I find it disgusting that we're taking away people's right to vote while making it easier for them to carry a gun,"...

....Because, as I've already laid out, minority and student populations are less likely to have driver's licenses, people in rural communities can't get them if their county doesn't even have a DMV, the disabled and those without cars will have the most difficult time even getting to a DMV, students often move to a new address every year, and on and on goes the list of reasons why this is a terrible idea.....

Assembly approves voter ID, sends bill to Senate

[excerpt] ....Instead of getting their licenses at DMV stations, drivers would receive a receipt they could use for up to 60 days to drive. Under the bill requiring ID at the polls, they could also use those temporary receipts to vote.

The other IDs that could be used to vote are: Wisconsin driver's licenses; state-issued ID cards; military IDs; passports; naturalization certificates; IDs issued by Wisconsin-based tribes; and certain student IDs.

The student IDs would be acceptable if they came from accredited public and private colleges and universities in Wisconsin, included signatures and expired within two years of being issued. Those showing college IDs would have to establish they are current students.

IDs from University of Wisconsin System schools do not meet those requirements, and changing to ones that do would cost the schools $1.1 million.

...Free IDs are provided in the bill to make sure the ID requirement is not considered an unconstitutional poll tax.

Those living in nursing homes and the like would be exempt from the law, as would victims of stalking and those opposed to having their photos taken on religious grounds.

A voter who forgot to bring a photo ID could cast a provisional ballot, which would be counted if the voter presented a clerk with a photo ID by the Friday after the election. [end excerpt]

Emily appears to have what my dear old Grandmother called “a case of the vapors”. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in rural Wisconsin. I’ve never once encountered anyone who couldn’t get a DL or a State ID because of the lack of a DMV facility in their County. Not one.

Emily Mills appears to be both stupid and a liar. Oh, wait, she’s a liberal.

Kudos to Wisconsin’s Republicans!

If you’re too lazy to get ID, then you don’t deserve to vote.

Not to mention if you live in a rural community you need to drive to get anywhere.

“And all of that voter fraud the backers of the bill keep crying about? I’m going to say this one more time and hope it actually penetrates some skulls: IT. DOESN’T. EXIST.”

Conveniently forgetting the cigarettes handed out to homeless people in 2004 and the tire slashings in WI, felons voting in many states, Acorn caught red-handed, etc.

Wasn't it the Democrat Party that passed the Jim Crow Laws?

I wonder how many Republicans were manning the Fire Hoses in Selma. Someone remind me which Republican Governor stood at the College door blocking the Black Students from entering the building.

I've got a million of them. Hypocrites supported by the victims of their policies. You really can't fix stupid.

Folks,

If anyone argues about Voter ID, point them to India. A population of 1.25 billion has voter ID given by the election commission for eligible voters. If they can do it, USA can do it !

I find it disgusting that we're taking away people's right to vote...

... as many times as they like in districts all across our major cities...

I live in MA. I vote twice a year, tops. I imagine it’s the same in WI. If students or whoever don’t take their civic duty seriously enough in the months and months between elections to drag themselves out of bed to go get an appropriate ID to vote, then we’re better off having them left off the rolls.

The only possible conclusion is that Emily believes that citizens who are members of racial minority groups are too stupid to figure out how to get a government issued photo ID. How Liberal of her.

Why have these people not been going around to the other many states that require photo id and bitching they change their policies? No democrats in these states talk about being disenfranchised, and in fact some of those states have high urban democrat populations. Nobody complains about not being able to vote.

WHat it amounts to is a guy screaming about something he has no idea what it really was. He doesn’t even know how bad it actually was under Jim Crow laws (which southern democrats ironically championed).

Emily is a die-hard, unthinking liberal. As such, she spouts the liberal line with narry a thought in her little pointed head.

This law says, in essence, that one must have a valid, legal photo ID to vote in WI.

So...Emily is correct. This law will dis-enfranchise the following democrat voters:
1. union thugs from out of state voting in union friendly precincts.
2. students with fake IDs.
3. Any legal resident of WI who is too stupid to get a legal photo ID.

These are three HUGE voting blocks for the dem/lib/prog/pops here in WI...so I can understand why they are so concerned.

Fellow Wisconsin conservatives. We win. Again!
