Assembly approves voter ID, sends bill to Senate

[excerpt] ....Instead of getting their licenses at DMV stations, drivers would receive a receipt they could use for up to 60 days to drive. Under the bill requiring ID at the polls, they could also use those temporary receipts to vote.

The other IDs that could be used to vote are: Wisconsin driver's licenses; state-issued ID cards; military IDs; passports; naturalization certificates; IDs issued by Wisconsin-based tribes; and certain student IDs.

The student IDs would be acceptable if they came from accredited public and private colleges and universities in Wisconsin, included signatures and expired within two years of being issued. Those showing college IDs would have to establish they are current students.

IDs from University of Wisconsin System schools do not meet those requirements, and changing to ones that do would cost the schools $1.1 million.

...Free IDs are provided in the bill to make sure the ID requirement is not considered an unconstitutional poll tax.

Those living in nursing homes and the like would be exempt from the law, as would victims of stalking and those opposed to having their photos taken on religious grounds.

A voter who forgot to bring a photo ID could cast a provisional ballot, which would be counted if the voter presented a clerk with a photo ID by the Friday after the election. [end excerpt]

Emily appears to have what my dear old Grandmother called “a case of the vapors”. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in rural Wisconsin. I’ve never once encountered anyone who couldn’t get a DL or a State ID because of the lack of a DMV facility in their County. Not one.

Emily Mills appears to be both stupid and a liar. Oh, wait, she’s a liberal.

Kudos to Wisconsin’s Republicans!

“And all of that voter fraud the backers of the bill keep crying about? I’m going to say this one more time and hope it actually penetrates some skulls: IT. DOESN’T. EXIST.”

Conveniently forgetting the cigarettes handed out to homeless people in 2004 and the tire slashings in WI, felons voting in many states, Acorn caught red-handed, etc.

Wasn't it the Democrat Party that passed the Jim Crow Laws?

I wonder how many Republicans were manning the Fire Hoses in Selma. Someone remind me which Republican Governor stood at the College door blocking the Black Students from entering the building.

I've got a million of them. Hypocrites supported by the victims of their policies. You really can't fix stupid.

they need to make it so you have to use your finger print to activate the voting machine that way one could only vote one time anywhere would also keep the dead people from voting. and not just in Wisconsin!

I live in MA. I vote twice a year, tops. I imagine it’s the same in WI. If students or whoever don’t take their civic duty seriously enough in the months and months between elections to drag themselves out of bed to go get an appropriate ID to vote, then we’re better off having them left off the rolls.

Why have these people not been going around to the other many states that require photo id and bitching they change their policies? No democrats in these states talk about being disenfranchised, and in fact some of those states have high urban democrat populations. Nobody complains about not being able to vote.

WHat it amounts to is a guy screaming about something he has no idea what it really was. He doesn’t even know how bad it actually was under Jim Crow laws (which southern democrats ironically championed).

If they can cash a check at Walmart, they have ID. What the Dems really hate is the prospect that they may not be able to continue to pay busloads of Chicago winos and welfare slugs to come vote in Wisconsin.

For the states that currently require photo-ID, including mine, is works out just fine. The rat cheaters and unions are upset because this law will make their task more difficult.

This is BS because you need a photo ID to cash a welfre check, for a bank account for social security or just to get your work check cashed. And Senaotor Schumer may not realize it yet but him wanting secuirty for trains will make demanding an ID to vote easier since everyone will alread have one to rde the subway/train.

Just curious how old Emily Mills might be. Old enough to remember Jim Crow laws? Doubtful

So according to her, blacks aren’t smart enough to possess valid IDs?

"Welcome to Wisconsin, Jim Crow!"

This bill is, at its core, a rollback of the right to vote that impacts the most vulnerable and already disenfranchised populations in the state. It spits in the face of those who've come before and fought (and sometimes died) to see this most fundamental right guaranteed to all citizens

And as soon as Jim Crow PROVES he is a citizen by showing a photo ID then he is welcome to vote.

Why does this very sensible precaution upset the democrats so much? BECAUSE THEY CHEAT! (and now they have to work much harder at it)

That only the left seems to have a problem (or near panic) with proving who you are before you vote speaks volumes as to what they’ve been up to for the past several election cycles.

A photo ID doesn’t stop any race from voting.

And Jim Crow laws were written by Democrats.

I left her a comment:

It spits in the face of those who've come before and fought (and sometimes died) to see this most fundamental right guaranteed to all citizens – not just those with a specific skin color, gender, or pocketbook size.

Jim Crow laws prevented people from voting (among other rights) based specifically on their skin color. This does nothing of the sort. What is does is respect the people who fought and died to ensure that the rights belonging to citizens are exercised by citizens.

Because, as I've already laid out, minority and student populations are less likely to have driver's licenses,

Because they don't own cars and don't need one. Students and minorities tend to live in cities and can thus easily obtain such an ID if they want to vote.

people in rural communities can't get them if their county doesn't even have a DMV,

But likely live close enough to a DMV in another county to get one.

n the disabled and those without cars will have the most difficult time even getting to a DMV,

This is your most valid criticism. Wisconsin will have to step up and ensure that something is done to assist such people.

students often move to a new address every year,

And if they really give a damn about voting will find the time once every two years to go get their ID updated. Again, universities and colleges are generally close enough to a DMV that they can get over there to do that.

According to a study of the 2004 elections conducted by the Brennan Center for Justice, "allegations yielded only 7 substantiated cases of individuals knowingly casting invalid votes that counted -- all persons with felony convictions." That's a fraud rate of just 0.0025% within Milwaukee and a measly 0.0002% statewide.

Yes - but "substantiated cases" means that a) someone knew about vote fraud, b) made an allegation and c) someone else decided to investigate it. If someone cast a fraudlent vote and nobody knew, it wouldn't show up. So, when you say in your linked post:

For the 2004 election participation in state’s that required photo ID was down 4 percent -- 10 percent among Hispanics, and 5.7 percent among African and Asian Americans.

what you may well be seeing is that the previous fraud rate among Hispanics was not .00002% but was 10%, and 5.7% same for persons of African and Asian descent. I say "descent" and not "-Americans" because perhaps they either aren't really Americans (plenty of illegal aliens don't come from Mexico) or just don't care enough about voting to go to the DMV to get an ID (again, minorities tend to congregate in cities). I also note that you don't comment on what the drop in voting was for whites. Did it not drop? Or did it drop but you chose not to report it. What is the source for the numbers you cite?

I see a lot of hypotheticals here. What I don't see is any data on actual people out there who don't actually have an ID (and who want one). You're just guessing.
