Latest liberal assault on school reform involves playing race card
Orlando Sentinel ^ | May 8, 2011 | Mike Thomas

Posted on 05/09/2011 2:08:58 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Last week we reported how charter schools are less racially diverse than traditional public schools.

This return to the dark days of our segregated past supposedly should be of concern to us even if it is not to the thousands of black parents who willingly enroll their children in the charter schools.

That would make the children victims of racism perpetrated by their parents, an interesting new twist on an old outrage.

Charter schools are publicly funded but privately run. They compete for students with public schools. Teachers' unions hate them because they take jobs from unionized teachers.

There are legitimate concerns. The schools lack the same oversight as public schools and, on average, do not perform better than public schools.

But last year the Civil Rights Project at the University of California, Los Angeles, upped the ante by injecting racism into the debate.

It released a national study calling charters a "civil rights failure" because they "stratify students by race, class, and possibly language."

The folks at UCLA argue that concentrating low-income minority kids leads to their failure. And so we need to dilute them with kids from the middle and upper class.

This has led to calls for some form of mandatory diversification at charter schools.

The problem is that the lack of diversity is voluntary. The schools don't pick students. They must take them on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are more kids than slots, then a lottery is held.

..the reason some charters are almost completely black is that black parents are happy with that arrangement.

This leaves the civil-rights activists arguing that the parents don't know what is best for their own children.

Can you say "liberal elitists"?

The notion that black kids have to be diluted with white kids also smacks of racism.

VIDEO linked here: Tucson’s Mexican-American Studies Problem [excerpt] America saw the results of teaching a racist curriculum to an impressionable group of kids and many may be wondering, "what is going on down there?" I spend nearly 8 minutes trying to answer that question, and honestly, it's not nearly enough time. ………..Loretta Hunnicutt, her husband John and long-time educator Richard Kronberg have decided to stand for what is right even though they are paying a high personal price.” [end excerpt]

Another "do-gooder" ambushed, mugged by the Left.

Stegeman feels heat of history (Mex-American studies in Tucson REMAIN core subject not elective) "..........We were talking at Raging Sage coffee shop Thursday, and Stegeman, who is board president, was still frazzled. He knew there would be backlash to his proposal to change high school social studies classes in the Mexican American Studies program into electives, rather than core requirements.

But the ferocity of the response caught him off-guard. He's been attacked as a racist, an apologist and as a lackey for Horne and Russell Pearce. ..."

The growth of homeschooling and private schools is slowly but surely rendering the race-baiting moot. Private schools choose whom they want, although they are generally prohibited from discriminating based on race. And of course, homeschooling simply takes the kids in question out of the equation.

So what you end up with is the government schools indoctrinating those children whose parents can’t or won’t provide for a private school or home educate. It’s just another form of welfare and we shouldn’t be surprised when over time, the demographics of those in the government schools become more and more similar to the demographics of those who accept other forms of welfare such as AFDC and food stamps.

May 8, 2011: Families along U.S.-Mexico border face tough school choices [excerpt] ...............Parents are left to choose between dividing the family between two countries, to keep children who are U.S. citizens in U.S. schools, or moving together to Mexico or Central America, where the education is inferior and the language is often foreign to U.S.-born children.

But in the border region, there’s a third option, little known elsewhere, and now facing mounting opposition: living in Mexico but crossing the border each day for American schooling.

As the immigration debate has intensified and school budgets have tightened, some districts have sent photographers to the border to identify students crossing from Mexico. In Arizona, officials last year sued a district for not adequately vetting the residency of students.

Problems began for Martinez and her family when her husband, Marcos Perdomo, 34, was arrested for drunken driving in 2009. After a four-month prison sentence, he was deported to Mexico.....

Martinez and Perdomo mulled their dilemma for days. Friends and relatives told Martinez she would be crazy to willingly move her family to Mexico, where violence was spreading amid an intensifying drug war. Perdomo said he didn’t know what he would do without the girls, now ages 4 through 13. Two of them had been diagnosed with learning disabilities — something U.S. schools, which on average spend five times as much as Mexican ones, typically manage better.

Martinez finally decided to move the family to Matamoros in early 2010 and make the daily journey across the Rio Grande with her daughters so that they could remain in the sleepy Texas school district of Port Isabel, where Martinez worked as a cashier at a grocery store. To evade residency requirements, Martinez registered her daughters for school using a relative’s address.

For months, the strategy appeared to be working.........[end excerpt]

The unions run public schools for their money laundering operations and to indoctrinate — a win-win for the Left that we foot the bill for.

Time to pull the plug.

The plug should have been pulled forty years ago...the last several generations are lost...may the public schools be damned for what they have done to our children and this country.

Lesson from Wisconsin - Bypass union teachers through independent online schools [excerpt] .............In Wisconsin and elsewhere, reactionary teachers unions have fought the expansion of online learning and virtual charters. Back in the early 2000s, the Wisconsin teachers unions sued to eliminate virtual charter schools. Eventually, the unions succeeded in getting a law passed limiting virtual charter enrollment. Other states also have enacted Luddite laws, backed by unions, against online learning.

If reformers like Mr. Walker want to overhaul their unionized school systems, they should attach funding to each individual student so he or she can take that funding to the school of his or her choice, whether a regular public school, brick-and-mortar charter school, virtual charter or private school.....[end excerpt]

“Time to pull the plug.”

Well past time, but that won’t happen from the legislative side. What will happen instead is that those who have any possibility of home educating or using private schools will do so. We’ll reach a tipping point where the government schools are in such low demand that they’ll become less of an issue. I don’t think they’ll ever go away completely, but I think it’s possible for them to become largely irrelevant.

Most of it boils down to peer pressure on parents. “You send your kids to public school? I’m sorry. Are you destitute? Can we help?”

I love the mom’s line: “I pay my taxes.”

She doesn’t earn enough, unless she makes $ 100,000 a year to pay the tuition of 6 kids in US schools.

Thanks for sharing that video!

1) That professor (from U of A) should not only be fired, but arrested and have all his assets seized by the FBI. I would have him immediately investigated to find out who are all his contacts.

2) That course needs to be eliminated. Look what it’s doing to the students and the community. It sounds to me as if it’s rewriting history and brain washing kids to hate not only white people but the USA.

3) I would have a police office posted at these controversial meetings. There is no excuse to let a bunch of communist thugs take over a meeting.

[excerpt] MIAMI — The U.S. Department of Education sent a letter to districts around the country Friday, reminding them that all students - legal or not - are entitled to a public education.

The letter comes amid reports that schools may be checking the immigration status of students trying to enroll, and reminds districts they are federally prohibited from barring elementary or secondary students on the basis of citizenship status.

"Moreover, districts may not request information with the purpose or result of denying access to public schools on the basis of race, color or national origin," said the letter, which was signed by officials from the department's Office of Civil Rights and the Department of Justice. [end excerpt]

It would be great if Rush or Breibart would highlight that video. Any of those quotes would drive traffic to their sites and for once, it would be “for the children.”

There is no excuse to let a bunch of communist thugs take over a meeting.

Monday - May 9, 2011 - Michelle Rhee to speak in D.C. Former D.C. schools chancellor Michelle Rhee is scheduled to speak today at an education conference in the District — and union officials are planning a protest outside.

....the policy summit hosted by the American Federation for Children, a nonprofit that pushes for private school vouchers and charter schools.

Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Gov. Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania are expected to talk about school choice. The topic of Rhee’s speech has not been released.

Walker has proposed expanding a school voucher program in Milwaukee. Corbett is proposing cutting $1.6 billion from public education while also pushing for vouchers, which would allow students in poor-performing public schools to transfer to private schools.

Union leaders and other activists are planning a rally outside the summit, which will also feature former District of Columbia schools chancellor Michelle Rhee. Opponents say the federation is trying to “dismantle public education.”

Ladybug, I’m so sick of him, it’s not even funny.

If he’s re-elected in 2012, I’m going to get so drunk that I won’t wake up for three days, and if I do, I’ll end up on a liver transplant list.

Honest to God, I’ve had enough of him and his crowd. I don’t even know how we survive ONE term, let alone TWO.

Large conservative turn out will be the only way the Left can not “massage” the 2012 outcome. To get that huge turnout, we need a candidate that will get those not listening to hear what’s happening and ignite passions and get people to the polls.

“the last several generations are lost...”

Hardly. Check out the notorious leftist site Yahoo Answers. The leftist morons who post there are under attack by conservatives and patriots. Many of these conservatives are in college and high school.

The propaganda press gives these brainwashed useful idiots a megaphone so their numbers appear larger than they are.

Stop in sometime and look around. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Also, don’t discount the homeschool movement.
The caliber of person produced by this movement far exceeds the dumbed down “elite” that the left is producing through their system.

The left’s system and its produce cannot, inherently, surpass that of the traditionally minded system, because the left’s system is based on untruth and unreality.
