As we draw closer to a government shutdown, I have been reading with great interest. You see, I am a federal employee employed at Fort Drum as a civilian mail clerk. I am looking at the possibility of a furlough for as long as it takes for Congress to reach an agreement. It could be days or it could be weeks, but regardless of how long, I am more concerned at how much. How much will this affect my family? How much will it hurt us financially? The uncertainty is maddening as I, and my fellow federal workers, watch the stage show that is called Washington Politics gamble with our way of making a living.

Well speaking as someone who owned a cosulting company which did salary surveys for Federal, State, City, and fire & police districts in the 90’s and 20’s, all areas of government were making about 20% more in total compensation than the equivelent job in the private sector. What is even worse it was very difficult to get rid of the losers which in the private sector were about 10% of the organization. In the Public sector it was closer to 30%.
I once tried to propose an incentive porgram for a Port Authority which Would share productivity gains 30% taxpayer 30% employees and 30% the Port. Politicians no like.
Government employees are nice folks but once you are sucking on the public teat its hard to quit.

Sorry, but with unemployment hovering at @ 10% nationwide, I’m supposed to be sorry because someone won’t get his/her paycheck or retirement check for a week or two?
Working for an immoral institution is itself immoral. Shut it down, and let the chips fall where they may.
I might be wrong, but during shutdowns, us Fed Employees cannot take leave.
Your plan has a fatal flaw. Furloughed Federal employees are not allowed to use vacation or sick time during the shutdown. All leave is automatically cancelled if the government shuts down and all non-essential employees revert to no-pay status.

All these employees will get back pay for the days they couldn’t work, once the gvt resumes spending, I mean business as usual. So why aren’t these people prepared for ANY type of financial emergency?

Hard to feel sorry for this person. Should have been saving for this moment since last year when they didn’t get this budget set. My parents always taught me to save for a rainy day. My husband and I work for a small business owner and we r commissioned salespeeps. Guess what? Our income has been cut in half because of the collapse of the housing industry.(We sell wholesale flooring supplies) No union helping us. Never know when it will be our last day. We don’t get the opportunity of negotiating a contract for cost of living increases. Cry me a river!
Here's a tip, and it's one that holds true for everyone, public or private sector: you can only depend on God, yourself, and maybe your family, in that order.
Regardless of where you work or what profession you choose to practice, you should be actively working on attaining good health and financial stability, gaining more useful education, and broadening and deepening mutually beneficial relationships with others. Having a purpose in life and having some sort of faith in something beyond the here and now is a major plus, since having both gives reason to hold steady even when you realize that each of us is nothing more than a blip on the radar screen of a cold, dark, and quiet physical universe.

so much hate and bitterness directed at a person who processes mail on a military installation. The civilianization of many military functions has gone on for a long time and civilian workers have not only been a force extender, but have saved a lot of guys from being drafted and reduced a lot of overhead defense dollars for turnover and training.
guess lots of you want her to get a real job, like flippng burgers or selling shoes or grooming pets. What is an “essential” civilian job anyway? Or go on unemployment like a lot of folks in upstate NY ...
there is a lot of pain coming to ordinary people in the civil service who get up and go to work every day to feed their kids, who used to be accepted as our neighbors friends and fellow citizens, who even felt like they were serving a greater cause even if in a small way, like sorting soldiers’ mail
If Uncle Sam wants to cut back, then eliminate terminate or trim programs and agencies. Don't just stop paying workers.

obama the great uniter and his merry band of alinsky marxists has managed to to make the entire federal civil service, mostly middle class, an object of contempt and scorn among the rest of the American middle class...along with Wall Street, banks, mortgage companies, insurance companies, oil companies, coal companies, drug companies, the Chamber of Commerce, and small businesses
who are they coming to dehumanize next?
I too am a federal employee. All I can say is—get a real job.
