The Border Patrol would remain on duty, mail would be delivered, and Social Security checks should go out on time. But a looming government shutdown could stall tax refunds, close national parks and museums, and put tens of thousands of Californians temporarily out of work.
Stopgap measures have kept government operations going since the current budget year began Oct. 1. The latest measure expires at the end of Friday, and with Democrats and Republicans unable to reach an agreement, the White House has told agencies to begin planning for a shutdown on Saturday.
California has a huge population of federal workers, roughly 170,000 according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, nearly the same number as Washington itself.
Employees deemed essential, such as air traffic controllers, doctors at VA hospitals, border agents and military personnel, probably will remain on the job as they did during the last major shutdown in 1995. Others, such as Internal Revenue Service employees at 27 California locations, might find their offices closed on Monday.
None would be paid until the dispute is over, though essential employees are likely to be reimbursed with back pay.
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management posted a message on its website late Tuesday for the 3 million members of the federal workforce, expressing hope that a settlement might still be reached but concluding that "given the realities of the calendar, prudent management requires we plan for an orderly shutdown should the negotiations not be completed by the end of the current continuing resolution."

If you do you may recall that nothing changed beyond providing a week or two of anti republican headlines for the liberal media.
Good Lord, no wonder they are broke.
Too much either working for the government or living off of it going on.
Layoff 10 to 20%. The country is bankrupt.
Cuck Falifornia - they’re beyond help now anyway.
About 90 minutes ago, Harry Reid was on TV saying that Its all about ideology. He was speaking about last nights joint meeting between himself, Obama, Biden and Boehner an IDEOLOGICAL three against one situation.
Go figure.
That Congress adjourned well after the 2010 elections and knew full well what the makeup of the new Congress would be. One can only assume from that fact that they were content to let the Republicans set priorities for the 2011 budget.
They could have passed an FY 2011 budget with much less trouble than they had shoving Obamacare down out throats. I guess we know where THEIR priorities were!
Good. Shut it down. I live here in the cesspool of the US.
Yeah, we all quake in our boots at the idea of the IRS shutting down. Exactly when was the IRS formed and how was the government supported before they came along? Just wondering . . .
I heard Nancy Pelosi crying that the federal shutdown would affect the elderly. Hey Miss stretch, Calif, if already shutting down day health for the elderly and continuing social services for illegals...IN YOUR STATE. What a hag.
I remember the last shut down well.
I remember the big rocks they rolled into the road to prevent travel into the park...I remember the big road sign which at the time seemed like a perfectly logical lever by which to move said rock.
I remember driving in and being amazed that it was so open so empty and sooo mine.
then again, I had no idea what kind of trouble I could have been in for doing that if I did it. :-)

it looks to me like the only asset that the government has is federal land. They need to start fire selling it. Not only would it boost revenue it would also help kick start the economy. Of course they won’t do that.
I find it hard to believe that none of these stories even mention that the ‘furloughed’ employees will get their full pay retro-actively. The shutdown is nothing but a free paid vacation for them.
“I find it hard to believe that none of these stories even mention that the furloughed employees will get their full pay retro-actively.”
The Dems don’t want you to believe that. Rep Moran (D-VA) has been telling his constiuents (lots of feds) that the Republicans aren’t going to allow retroactive pay.

“I’ve talked to too many people in the (Republican) majority who are determined that this shutdown needs to occur, who feel that it wouldn’t be appropriate to make the money available to compensate those who didn’t work,” Moran tells WTOP.
bttt
Agreement is not possible. I t would be like agreeing to jump halfway off of a cliff.
This is like trying to compromise with an alcoholic.
“Exactly when was the IRS formed”
Wouldn’t that be Woodrow Wilson, who also cursed us with direct election of Senators, the Federal Reserve system, and dragged us into WWI?
Another Academic Moron.
Ca. would get hurt? They’ve done Nothing but Screw the Other 49 states Through DC for decades. Fine. Shut It Down!
Last time the shut down was a paid holiday for govt workers. My wife was working for USN at the time and got off..and then got back pay for those days.

Good point. California could do the rest of the nation a service by demonstrating in real life what happens to States that are ruined by liberal policies. They could be a map for the rest of the nation of “what not to do.”
