Donning a plaid shirt and sitting on the same Richmond porch steps where he announced his first bid for city council, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine announced in a video that he is indeed running for Senate in Virginia.
The announcement came one day after President Barack Obama, who appointed the former Virginia governor to lead the DNC in 2009, announced his re-election campaign for president. Kaine is scheduled to hold a media availability Wednesday morning in Richmond to discuss the race.
Im running for the United States Senate because America has big challenges, and Im convinced Virginia has answers to help strengthen our nation, Kaine said.
His entrance sets up a likely marquee showdown with former Sen. George Allen, who must first win a GOP primary. Kaine is not expected to face any major opposition for the Democratic nod.

This is an eyebrow-raising development, one which makes this ground zero in the fight for control of the U.S. Senate. It could easily go either way.
The war that is coming is between the providers of tax revenue and the consumer of tax revenue, and VA is squarely on the consumer side, sadly.
Not really to most Virginians Kaine is not well thought of here by a longshot now.
LOL!
Kaine seems both stupid when he talks and to me, he is hard to look at with those weird eyebrows.
Let us hope obama goes to campaign for him and works the same magic he did for Mr Deeds.
“This is an eyebrow-raising development”
I think whatever “popularity” Kaine had has since vanished, especially given his disastrous tenure as DNC Chairman and the overall appearance of his being a Zero handpuppet. Only if the GOP had a brutal primary battle and Allen (if nominated) runs another lackluster race does Kaine stand a chance.
Kaine is a loser. Look at it from a Democrat viewpoint. He gave up control of the governorship to a Republican. His guys were bounced out of the legislature left and right. Then, as DNC National Chairman he LOST EVERYTHING nationally to Mike Steele, the black guy, and the Republicans.
Kaine has lost a lot of popularity. He’ll be running with Obama in 2012, so a lot will depend on O’s favorable rating. But this is very, very, very winnable for George Allen. It’s not a given, but it’s winnable.
Best comment I heard about Kaine’s replacement at DNC is that she only has to lose less than 63 House seats to have a better record than Kaine.
