Speaking of plumb lines...

Why don’t they hook a cable about 60’ from the end of a 500’ long 3” fire hose, put a 500 pound weight on the (60’) end, and drop it into the spent fuel pool of #3 with a helo. They could then hook a firetruck to the other end and pump water into the pool from 400’ away. The weight would keep the hose from jumping out of the 40’ deep pool.

If the 500 pound weight was pointed on the bottom, one could punch through the roof of #4, too. Just sayin.

That article is so poorly written it’s incomprehensible. There are trace levels, none dangerous, and yet they are directing people with symptoms of radiation sickness...

someone pointed out that a Chicom nuke test set off the same detectors.

Panic-mongering remains profitable.

FOX

"The radiation at O’Hare was coming from a routine medical shipment that was bound for Mexico.

"U.S. Customs said the radiation test was positive, but at no time was the radiation at unsafe levels."

"The scan lasted about 15 minutes and no passengers were detained."

"The airport was performing a random security check, but now all planes from Japan are being screened. American Airlines said the check at the gate is routine, and passengers might not even know they were being screened for radiation."

“It means nothing whatsoever,” Heartland Institute Science Director Jay Lehr said. Lehr is a proponent of nuclear energy and an expert in the field. He said that the radiation measurements were miniscule, and several hundred times less than amounts that could potentially cause harm to people."

This may be a stupid question but is the media actually TRYING to cause a panic???? Geez, 48 Americans died in coal mining accidents in 2010 and they hardly noticed.

I’m not losing any sleep over this.
I grew up in the 50s when the US and Russia were routinely firing off atmospheric nukes.
I do glow in the dark occasionally though.

Perhaps generators were not brought in due to incompetence,

I doubt that. Maybe they just need a lot of power, and not nursing the generators (and carting around the BATTERIES) will take one problem off the table. Also, depending on the transmission disance, many high voltage will allow them to get electricity to places that they have had to cart batteries.

Why didn’t Hueys fly in some replacement generators five days ago. They could have borrowed big units from local ski resorts, and hooked them up in an hour.

With all of the BS flying around it is hard to tell what is going on. And the Talking Heads on TV are the worse.

is the media actually TRYING to cause a panic

In the 50s and 60s, there were quite a few commercial aviation crashes as modern jet aircraft were developed. If we had the same MSM back then as we do today, I'm guessing we'd exclusively be riding trains and ships today.

LOL...I don’t mean to make fun of that article, but...did you read the legend on the animation?

“Relative levels of radiation-arbitrary units”

Now come on. There is plenty to be concerned about here, but that animation is just silly. If one wants to use it as a tool to look at air currents, that is probably fine, but the units mean absolutely nothing.

Actually, I give them some small points of credit to them on behalf of anyone who reads to the very end of that article: “Health and nuclear experts emphasize that any plume will be diluted as it travels and, at worst, would have extremely minor health consequences in the United States.”

I thought along the same lines. But they would have to be careful that once the line was established, something didn’t happen and they now had an inadvertant siphon draining the pool, instaed of the other way ‘round. It looks to me like the pools are fairly high in the structure. I’m not saying it can’t be done (check valves, etc), I’m just saying to be careful, because apparently whatever can go wrong will go wrong in this situation.

And, again, see my #10.

That report means little, other than to pump up the fear mongering that has been the main theme of Western reporting on this story.

Correct me if I am wrong on this. There is no such thing as a small meltdown. If the fuel rods start to melt down it can't be shut down.

After several explosions and fires, what makes them think the pumps still work?

Before you worry about holding onto your seat, take a close look at this, and think long and hard about it before adding to the fear-mongering from the media. From that page:

Let's say it again for effect: Arbitrary. Units.

Japan has done a stunningly bad job communicating, both at the company level and at the governmental level.

For those of you who haven't ever been in a real crisis control situation, here are a couple of facts you may find of interest. I'll make these REAL SIMPLE so even the Sheperd Smiths of the world can understand them.

1. The people most in-the-know of what's going on and how to fix it are the people on-site directly involved with overcoming the difficulties.

2. For the people in-the-know to communicate the minute details to their superiors and management requires them to spend time.

3. The time that the people in-the-know spend explaining to management what's going on and what needs to be done TAKES THEM AWAY FROM FIXING THE PROBLEM!

4. The time away from fixing the problem in a critical situation such as this means that it takes much longer to fix than it otherwise would.

5. When one is working pretty much around the clock, there is a need for occasional rest and recuperation. Having only 0 to 4 hours of sleep each 24 hour period causes loss of functionality - and the older one gets, the more severe impact it has.

6. The time making explanations not only takes them away from fixing the problem, but it also means they can't get the rest they need throughout the process.

7. I personally want them to be left alone so they can get it fixed. The only explanations necessary to be communicated to management are those that will provide explanations only to a level of detail necessary to communicate what may be needed to get it done.

They’ve spoken specifically about #2 in terms of hooking up the wiring/pumps. The other buildings, and likely the wiring in them are blown to rubble.
