ATLANTA - A last-minute effort to pass a so-called "Birther Bill" at the Capitol appears to have failed Wednesday.
The bill would require that candidates for president and vice-president prove their citizenship.
Critics said the bill would have embarrassed the state and they say it was inspired by claims that question President Barack Obama's citizenship.
The bill is likely dead for this legislative session.
The bill initially had 94 signers, but that number dropped to 65 as co-sponsors deleted their names.
The measure would force candidates for president and vice president to certify their citizenship with the Georgia secretary of state's office before going on the ballot in the state.
The measure could potentially be attached to other legislation, but that's not likely to happen.
The House speaker sent signals days ago that he did not favor a vote on the bill.

Cowards.
Yea, the check pants Repuglicans think it is not dignified to question the MESSIAH.
Spineless is the nicest thing I could call them.I guess they figure we wont remember come next election. They figure wrong.
Have any states actually passed this yet?
Not one of these will pass and Obama knows it.
Arnold 2012
Nope. Not that I know of. And none of them will, either.
They are too afraid of what will happen because there are all sorts of ways the federal government can make things difficult for states that get too uppity.

In putting together a list of "birther" bills in the state legislatures I've found exceedingly difficult to find them. Press reports don't give legislative bill titles or even the bill numbers. In some cases it's very hard to find out the bill sponsor or if you do, the list of sponsoring legislation on their site is unnavigable.
If you live in any of the states with "birther" bills stuck in committee - write and call your representatives with the bill #.
It’s a Constitutional requirement and important, but passing these bills to go in effect immediately would give the appearance of mere political tricks to overturn an electoral verdict we don’t like. I wish the efforts had been more focused on making laws applicable to 2016 and beyond when President Obama is not affected and focus could then be totally on the important Constitutional issue without political distraction.
“One RINO held this up. GA House speaker David Ralston.”

Makes me sick.
My parents were from Atlanta.
Apparently we still have a shot. Even one state might be enough.
There is NO rational cause for these bills to fail in every state.
I believe refusing to supply the long form birth certificate is a red herring political strategy. Talk of the issues dies out and Obama himself brings it up again, using "birthers" as his own Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. It's a way to mock his political opponents and dismiss them as conspiratorial crazies.
I hope people make use of it. One state really is enough, but will even one step up? It’s not looking good. People need to be active if they care about this issue.
4 AM Bump! Thanks! ;-)
There’s also another problem with the bc bills. If Obama were to lose as a result of his name not appearing on one or more ballots, he might tie the Presidency up in a legal battle that would put 2000 to shame. His rejection on some ballots in Republican states might intensify support for him in other states. When you think about it, we are going to win the only states where these bills might pass.
The real threat to us is the popular vote movement to have states cast their electoral votes for the national winner of the popular vote. This denies voters in small states of their representation and might also result in court challenges. The big population states with the largest fraud potential are all democrat states. This legislation will end the republic and make the US an unworkable democracy.
